Internet Speed in Armenia: Mobile Data, 5G, and What a Trip Needs
You land in Yerevan with a work call that afternoon, and the next day you drive to Dilijan or Goris. Will your phone keep up?
For nearly everything a traveler does, yes. Internet speed in Armenia on mobile had a median of 75.66 Mbps down and 21.81 Mbps up on Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for August 2026, with 18 ms latency. That ranked 60th in the world. Maps, rides, and video calls use a small part of that speed, so coverage on your route matters more than the headline number.
In short:
- Ookla, August 2026: 75.66 Mbps down, 21.81 up, 18 ms latency on mobile. Fixed broadband: 89.84 down, 86.92 up.
- Viva was the fastest network in Ookla's report for the first half of 2026, with a 101.44 Mbps median. Ucom won the half before.
- Viva's 5G+ list grew in October 2026 and now includes Jermuk and Goris. Of the nine tourist stops below, only Areni has 5G from no operator.
- The Moosetrip Armenia eSIM runs on Viva. We do not promise 5G on it, and 4G handles maps and video calls.
What Ookla's numbers show
Ookla builds the index from speed tests that people run themselves. It takes the median for each country over the previous three months and updates the figures mid-month. A median splits the tests in half, so one record result barely moves it.
| August 2026 index | Mobile | Fixed broadband |
|---|---|---|
| Median download | 75.66 Mbps | 89.84 Mbps |
| Median upload | 21.81 Mbps | 86.92 Mbps |
| Latency | 18 ms | 4 ms |
| World rank | 60th | 90th |
Upload is the speed for sending: photos, files, and your side of a video call. Latency is the delay before the network answers. Lower is better, and you feel it most on calls.
The mobile median has stayed in a fairly narrow band for a year.
| Index month | Mobile download | World rank |
|---|---|---|
| August 2025 | 66.75 Mbps | 60th |
| October 2025 | 61.25 Mbps | 66th |
| February 2026 | 80.71 Mbps | 59th |
| August 2026 | 75.66 Mbps | 60th |
Across all 13 releases, download stayed between 61.25 and 80.71 Mbps, and upload between 18.80 and 22.71 Mbps. Latency was 18 ms every time.
Fixed lines are about 4 times faster on upload. Hotel Wi-Fi often runs on a fixed line, so send big batches of photos from there. At the medians, a 100 MB file takes about 37 seconds on mobile and about 9 seconds on fixed. Your hotel's line may differ, so run a speed test first.
The index gives one figure for the whole country. It does not split Yerevan from the mountains, or one operator from another.
Which operator is fastest
Twice a year, Ookla compares operators in its Speedtest Awards. The main figure is the Speed Score, which weighs download at 70%, upload at 20%, and latency at 10%. Team appears in these reports as Telecom Armenia.
| Operator | Speed Score, first half 2026 | Median download | Median upload | Slowest 10% starts at | Speed Score, second half 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Viva | 64.59 | 101.44 Mbps | 21.99 Mbps | 9.61 Mbps | 52.33 |
| Ucom | 61.17 | 74.54 Mbps | 21.04 Mbps | 17.56 Mbps | 65.22 |
| Team | 55.37 | 53.85 Mbps | 24.43 Mbps | 7.99 Mbps | 56.86 |
Three things stand out:
- The lead changed hands. Ucom was first in late 2025 with an 89.65 Mbps median, and Viva was third at 47.23. Viva then more than doubled its median.
- Viva's jump came before 5G+. The report covers the first half of 2026, and Viva launched its 5G+ network in July.
- The median is not the whole story. One test in ten fell below 17.56 Mbps on Ucom and below 9.61 Mbps on Viva. So Ucom's slowest tests were stronger, even though Viva's typical test was faster.
A second Ookla award for late 2025 scored the whole experience, including web pages and video. Ucom led with 77.77 points, ahead of Team at 72.95 and Viva at 70.13. In daily use the gap was small. On all three networks, more than 99% of users watched video without stalling for most of their views, and web pages loaded in 1.73 to 1.92 seconds.
Ucom's 5G page warns that speed falls in crowded places, on busy towers, and far from a tower.
Where 5G works in Armenia
Each operator shows 5G its own way: Ucom in a table, Viva in a PDF list, and Team as a layer on its coverage map. Here they are side by side for nine places tourists often visit.
| Place | Ucom, data as of 2026-01-16 | Viva, list from October 2026 | Team, map checked 2026-09-30 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yerevan | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Gyumri | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Dilijan | Yes | Yes | No |
| Sevan | Yes | Yes | No |
| Tsaghkadzor | Yes | Yes | No |
| Alaverdi | Yes | Yes | No |
| Jermuk | Yes | Yes | No |
| Goris | Yes | Yes | No |
| Areni | No | No | No |
Viva. The October 2026 list has 95 towns and villages in Yerevan and nine provinces, plus Zvartnots International Airport. Seven towns are new since the July list: Goris, Kapan, Kajaran, and Sisian in Syunik, and Jermuk, Vayk, and Yeghegnadzor in Vayots Dzor. The list also names the beach areas of Sevan village and the customs checkpoint at Bagratashen. Areni and Tatev are not on it. When 5G+ launched in July, Viva said it planned to reach all of Armenia's cities by the end of the year. 5G+ needs a USIM or an eSIM, so an old SIM card may not work.
Ucom. As of January 16, 2026, Ucom said its 5G reached 48 cities and 447 villages and 94.62% of the population. Data-only plans such as uGo do not get 5G yet.
Team. Team's 5G page promises up to 500 Mbps and names Yerevan districts such as Erebuni, Shengavit, and Nubarashen. Its map shades 5G only around central Yerevan and Gyumri. It shows 4G at all nine places in the table.
Which phones get 5G
The operators keep separate phone lists, and they do not match. This matters if you buy a local SIM.
- Viva: the iPhone list starts at the 15 series and includes iPhone Air and 17e. It also covers many Samsung Galaxy S, Z Fold, Z Flip, and A models.
- Team: iPhone 12 and later, iPhone SE (3rd generation), Google Pixel 5 and later, Xiaomi Mi 10 and later, and OnePlus 8 and later.
- Ucom: many iOS and Android phones. Samsung phones need Android 16 or later, and Google Pixel phones do not connect to its 5G.
Is 4G enough for a tourist?
Our data estimates run high on purpose: 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps and rides, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. Turn those into speed and you get rough rates. The table compares them with the low end of Viva's tests, the point where one test in ten was slower.
| Task | Rate from our estimate | Margin on 9.61 Mbps down | Margin on 3.35 Mbps up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maps and rides | About 0.44 Mbps | About 22 times | About 7 times |
| Video calls | About 1.5 Mbps | About 6 times | About 2 times |
Even at that low end, calls have room. Upload is the tighter number, so on a weak signal your side of a call will likely suffer first. Before an important call, test both Wi-Fi and mobile data and use the better upload.
Speed drops at the edge of coverage. On Team's map, 4G thins out on short stretches near Dzoraget on the road to Alaverdi, on the climb from Tsovagyugh to the Dilijan tunnel, and at one point before Noravank. Mountain roads are the place to expect gaps. Save an offline map at your hotel before you set out.
Pick your plan by how many hours you will use maps and calls, not by network speed. Our data guide has the math by trip length.
Getting data on your phone
If your US plan already includes data in Armenia at a fair price, you may not need anything else. Check before you go. If you want a lot of data for two weeks or more, a local SIM usually costs less per gigabyte. Our Armenia internet guide compares SIM, eSIM, and roaming.
If you want data ready at landing, the Moosetrip Armenia eSIM runs on Viva, which our catalog lists as Vivacell. We do not promise 5G on it. The Ookla figures cover all subscribers on a network, so they are not a measure of any one eSIM.
It is data only, with no phone number. Install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code. Your days start at your first connection in Armenia, and your normal number stays on as a second line. You can add more data to the same eSIM later. Our eSIM guide explains how it works.
Prices on 2026-10-30:
