Pocket WiFi Japan vs eSIM: Which Costs Less for Your Trip?

You land in Japan and need maps, train times and translation right away. You can rent a small Wi-Fi router, or put an eSIM on each phone. The pocket WiFi Japan vs eSIM choice mostly comes down to head count. On prices checked October 30, 2026, an eSIM costs less for 1 or 2 people. For 4 people who stay together, a shared router can tie it, and it wins on a long trip with heavy data use.

In short:

  • 1 person, 7 days: a 5 GB eSIM from Moosetrip is $10.50. Sakura Mobile's router showed ¥9,900, about $66.
  • 4 people, 14 days: four 10 GB eSIMs are $68. Japan Wireless listed ¥12,430, about $83, or about $66 with a 20% code.
  • A router also means pickup, charging and mailing it back. The rental pages we read give no late fee amount.
  • A router makes sense for a group that stays together, for phones that can't use eSIM, or for very heavy data use.

Pocket WiFi rental prices in Japan

Prices come from each company's own site on October 30, 2026. Dollar figures use about ¥150 to $1, the rate behind Japan Wireless's own conversions. Your card rate will differ.

Company7 days14 days30 daysNetworkData
Sakura Mobile¥9,900 (about $66)¥18,300 (about $122)¥37,500 (about $250)docomo 4G/LTEUnlimited
Japan WirelessNot on the pages we read¥12,430 (about $83), ¥9,944 (about $66) with a 20% code¥20,860 (about $139)SoftBank 4GUnlimited

A few things to read before you trust any headline rate:

  • Daily rates depend on length. Japan Wireless advertises from $4.70 a day, close to its 30-day rate of about ¥695 a day. A single day costs ¥4,064.
  • Sakura's numbers don't fully line up. Its headline says from ¥329 a day with tax. Its own calculator showed ¥9,900 for 7 days, next to a "long-term discount" label. The page doesn't say which rental length the headline covers, so we used the calculator total. Run your exact dates before you decide.
  • The Japan Wireless code may change. Its guide says to verify the 20% code before you pay.
  • Sakura takes 10% off when you rent 2 or more devices. The page doesn't say how that combines with the long-term discount.
  • Sakura charges in yen only. If your card has a foreign transaction fee, add it.
  • Delivery isn't priced on these pages. Neither company shows a fee for pickup or delivery on the pages we read, and neither shows an insurance price.

What 1, 2 and 4 people pay

To pick a plan, we used two levels of use per person. As a rough guide, 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and rides, or 1.5 hours of video calls.

  • Normal use: 3 hours of maps a day, about 0.6 GB. That needs 5 GB for 7 days and 10 GB for 14 days.
  • Heavy use: the same, plus 1 hour of video calls a day, about 1.3 GB. That needs 10 GB for 7 days and 20 GB for 14 days.

Router prices are for one device shared by everyone, before delivery and insurance.

14 days2$34$56$122$83 ($66 with code)
14 days4$68$112$122$83 ($66 with code)

What the table shows:

  • For 1 or 2 people, the eSIM is cheaper in every row.
  • For 4 people on normal use, the eSIM is cheaper for 7 days. At 14 days it costs about the same as Japan Wireless with the code.
  • For 4 people on heavy use, 7 days is a tie with Sakura. At 14 days the router wins by $29, or $46 with the code.

One catch: a shared router only works while the group is together. If two people split off for the afternoon, someone goes offline. A second router nearly doubles the rental.

Deposits, returns and late fees

Deposit. Neither Sakura's page nor the Japan Wireless pages we read mention one. That doesn't prove there is none, so check at checkout.

Returning the device. Both companies include a prepaid envelope.

  • Sakura asks you to drop it in a Japan Post mailbox by midnight on your return date.
  • Japan Wireless takes it in any postbox in Japan. Its home page gives two deadlines: 3:00 PM the day after the rental ends in one section, noon the next day in another. Plan for the earlier one.
  • Japan Wireless says you can use a red Japan Post letterbox at airport departure terminals before security. Keep the envelope in your carry-on and post it there.

Late returns. Japan Wireless says it charges extra days but gives no amount on the pages we read. Sakura's page lists no late fee. Ask for the number in writing before you book.

Lost or damaged devices. Japan Wireless charges a replacement fee unless you added its optional Device Protection. No amount is shown. Sakura's page doesn't cover it.

With an eSIM, none of this applies. There is nothing to pick up, charge or mail back.

Data limits, battery and connections

Both routers are sold as unlimited. Japan Wireless says it has no daily limit and no fair usage cap, though carrier congestion can still slow things down. Sakura says no cut-offs or extra charges. Neither gives a speed figure. If you compare a cheaper plan from another company, check whether it caps your data.

An eSIM gives you a set amount of data, up to 20 GB per plan, and you can add more. A router gives one person a job: keep it charged and in the bag.

When pocket WiFi is the better choice

Pick a router if:

  • You are 4 or more people, you stay together, and you use a lot of data.
  • A phone in your group can't use eSIM or is locked to a carrier. Check your phone here.
  • You need to connect laptops or tablets that don't take an eSIM.
  • You would burn through more than 20 GB per person and don't want to watch the meter.

Pick an eSIM if you travel alone or as a couple, your group will split up, or you don't want to deal with pickup and return.

You may need neither. If your US plan already includes data in Japan at a price you like, check that first.
