Uber in Italy: Where It Works, What It Costs, What to Use Instead

Yes, Uber works in Italy, but not the way it does at home. Uber's pages for Rome and Milan show no UberX. The cheapest option is a regular licensed taxi, booked through itTaxi, Italy's national radio taxi network. Everything else is a pricier car with a professional driver. Uber lists taxis in Rome, Milan, Florence, Naples, Turin, Bologna, and hundreds of smaller towns. Venice is not on the list.

So the app rarely saves you money. At Rome's Fiumicino Airport, the taxi rank is often easier: a fixed €55 to the historic center, set by the city for 2026, with no app at all. And any app only works if your phone is online when you walk out of the terminal.

Prices are in euros, as Uber and the city of Rome list them, checked on 2026-11-05.

In short:

  • Uber in Rome and Milan: Taxi, Taxi Van, Comfort, Electric, Black, and Van. No UberX.
  • Uber's averages: Rome to Fiumicino is €58 by taxi and €111 by Black. Milan to Malpensa is €113 by taxi and €185 by Black.
  • Rome's fixed taxi fares from May 21, 2026: €55 from Fiumicino and €40 from Ciampino to inside the Aurelian Walls.
  • FREENOW lists 11 Italian cities, including Rome, Milan, and Naples, but not Florence or Venice.

What Uber offers in Italy

On its airport pages for Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Malpensa (MXP), Uber lists six ride options. Two are licensed city taxis booked through itTaxi. The other four use what Uber calls professional drivers.

OptionWhat you getSeatsRome to FCO, averageMilan to MXP, average
TaxiLicensed city taxi4€58€113
Taxi VanLicensed taxi for groups6€74€117
ComfortCar with a professional driver4€80€135
ElectricElectric car, professional driver4€84€117
BlackLuxury car, professional driver4€111€185
VanVan with a professional driver6€124€220

Seats are from the Malpensa page. Uber says these averages are not fixed or guaranteed prices.

You see a price before you book. At Fiumicino, Uber says the taxi price is a maximum: you pay that or the meter, whichever is lower. At Malpensa, you pay exactly the price shown, booking fee included. If you reserve ahead, Uber locks in the price.

Why there is no UberX, and what it means for price

UberX, where ordinary drivers use their own cars, does not appear on Uber's pages for Rome or Milan, and Uber doesn't say why. For you, the result is simple: the cheapest Uber in Italy is a normal taxi, and every step up costs more. To Fiumicino, Black averaged almost twice the taxi price, €111 against €58. In Milan, it was €185 against €113.

So "Uber vs taxi" in Italy is not a contest on price. The case for Uber is convenience: you book in English, see a price first, and skip calling in Italian.

Where Uber works in Italy

Uber's list of taxi cities in Italy runs to hundreds of names, most of them suburbs of big cities. It also carries a few stray towns from other countries, so treat it as a guide and open the app at your stop. FREENOW, a European taxi app, lists 11 Italian cities.

Taxi apps that work in Italy

Uber books licensed taxis through itTaxi in the cities above. In Rome and Milan, it also offers the pricier car classes.

FREENOW books taxis in its 11 Italian cities and says you need no cash for those rides.

itTaxi is the app of Italy's national radio taxi consortium. It calls itself the country's largest taxi fleet, and its city list was updated on October 22, 2026.

ChiamaTaxi in Rome. Rome's single taxi number is 060609. A call goes to the nearest taxi stand first, then to free taxis nearby. The city also has a ChiamaTaxi app.

Rome airport taxis: fixed fares for 2026

Rome sets taxi fares by city resolution, and the current one is No. 157 of May 21, 2026. A fixed fare covers the whole car, not each person. It includes luggage, other extras, and highway tolls. Only a fifth passenger or more costs extra, at €5 each. The fare is for a direct trip, with no stops.

RouteFixed fare
Fiumicino to inside the Aurelian Walls€55
Ciampino to inside the Aurelian Walls€40
Fiumicino to Tiburtina station€60
Fiumicino to Ostiense station€50
Fiumicino to Ciampino€55
Fiumicino to Civitavecchia cruise port€130
Inside the walls to Civitavecchia port€150

The Aurelian Walls are the old walls around the historic center, and most sights sit inside them. Check that your hotel does too. If not, the meter runs, with a €35 minimum from Fiumicino and €25 from Ciampino. A ride between Fiumicino and anywhere inside the GRA ring road can't go above €80.

Rome's transport agency puts the trip at 40 to 50 minutes from Fiumicino and about 30 from Ciampino. The fixed fare also applies when you book a taxi by app or phone from inside Rome, as long as the driver doesn't wait more than 10 minutes past the agreed time. Uber's €58 taxi average covers trips from anywhere in Rome, so from inside the walls, expect the city fare.

At the rank. At Fiumicino, official taxis wait at the Arrivals level of Terminals 1 and 3. They are white, with a TAXI sign on the roof and the city crest and license number on the front doors. The airport warns that people offering rides inside the terminal may have no taxi permit.

LuggageFirst bag free, €1 for each extra bag over 35 x 25 x 50 cm

The city's own example: a 5 km weekday ride with 5 minutes of waiting costs €13.10.

If you book by app or phone inside the GRA, the meter may already be running when the car arrives. When you get in, it can show no more than the start fee plus €5. Drivers must give you a receipt, so ask for one.

Milan airports: what we could confirm

Uber's averages to Malpensa are in the table above. We could not confirm Milan's own taxi rates for 2026. The city's taxi page refused our request, the Malpensa airport site would not connect, and the newest fare sheet we found is from July 2024. So we quote no city fare. At the rank, ask for the total before you get in.

Paying for a taxi in Italy

In Uber, you pay from your Uber account. FREENOW says its taxi rides need no cash. Rome's ChiamaTaxi app doesn't take cards yet. The city lists that as a coming feature.

For street taxis, we found no card rule in a 2025 or 2026 source. Rome's 2026 tariff and the transport agency's taxi page don't mention cards, and Fiumicino Airport tells riders to check payment with the driver before the ride. So ask "Carta?" before you get in, and carry enough euros for the fare. Check whether your US card adds a foreign transaction fee.

Venice: boats, not cars

The historic center of Venice has no cars, so there is nothing for Uber or FREENOW to send, and neither lists Venice. Taxis there are boats. We could not open a current water taxi fare page from the city, so we quote no price. Ask for the full price before you board, bags included.

What fails without mobile data

  • Booking in Uber, FREENOW, or itTaxi, and seeing the price first.
  • Finding your driver at a busy curb.
  • Your map and your hotel address, unless you saved them offline.

Fiumicino has free Wi-Fi in arrivals, covered in our Rome airport SIM guide. But Wi-Fi ends at the door, and your car waits outside. If you land with no data, skip the app. Walk to the white taxis at the rank and ask for the fixed fare to the center. Other ways to get online on arrival are in buying a SIM at the airport.

Mobile data for taxi apps

If your US plan already covers Italy at a price you like, keep it. Daily passes and Italian SIMs are compared in our internet in Italy guide.

A Moosetrip eSIM for Italy is data only and runs on TIM, Iliad, and Wind. You install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code. The days start at your first connection in Italy, and your US number stays on as a second line. Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked, so check your phone first.

As a generous estimate, 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps. A week with 2 hours of maps and rides a day is about 3 GB. More in how much data you need.

Prices on 2026-11-05:

PlanPrice
1 GB, 7 days$3.50
3 GB, 30 days$7
5 GB, 30 days$9.50

If you run low, add data to the same eSIM. Install your taxi apps and sign in while you are still at home.
