Verizon Travel Pass Cost: What a Trip Really Costs vs an eSIM

Your phone connects when the plane lands, and the Verizon meter starts. Verizon TravelPass costs $12 a day in most countries and $6 a day in Canada and Mexico, as of October 30, 2026. A 7-day trip to Italy comes to $84. A 14-day trip would be $168, so Verizon steers longer trips to its $100 monthly plan. A data-only Moosetrip eSIM for those two trips costs $7 and $9.50.

That does not mean everyone needs an eSIM. If you have Unlimited Ultimate, or you are going to Canada or Mexico on an Unlimited plan, your data abroad is already covered.

In short:

  • TravelPass: $12 a day in 210+ destinations, $6 a day in Canada and Mexico, with 5 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour session.
  • Monthly plan: $100 with 20 GB of high-speed data, 250 minutes and unlimited texts. It beats TravelPass from day 9.
  • A Moosetrip eSIM costs less at every trip length below, but it is data only and your phone can't be locked to Verizon.
  • Stay with Verizon if your plan already covers the trip, if you need regular calls, or if you still owe money on your phone.

What Verizon charges right now

These prices come from Verizon's site, checked October 30, 2026.

TravelPass, Canada and Mexico$6 a day5 GB per session, then 3GUnlimited
International Monthly Plan$100 a month20 GB, then 3G250 minutes, unlimited texts
Unlimited UltimatePart of the plan15 GB a month, then up to 1.5 MbpsUnlimited in 210+ destinations

A few details change the math:

  • TravelPass is automatic on some plans. Verizon adds it to Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome. You pay only on days you use the phone abroad, and nothing at home.
  • Speed drops after 5 GB. Data continues at 3G speeds until the session ends. Verizon's plan terms describe 3G as up to 1 Mbps. More high-speed data costs $10 for 2 GB, or $5 in Canada and Mexico.
  • The monthly plan can renew. Verizon lets you pick one month or monthly renewal, so choose on purpose.
  • Pay as you go is the expensive fallback. It applies if you have neither option, or if you travel outside the 210+ list. Verizon's rates table shows $1.79 a minute and $2.05 per MB in Italy, France, Japan, Thailand, Turkey and the UK. At that rate, 1,000 MB would cost $2,050.
  • Older plans may differ. Check your own plan in My Verizon before you trust any table, including this one.

How a TravelPass day is really counted

This part is worth reading twice. A TravelPass day is a session, not a calendar day.

  • It lasts 24 hours from the moment it starts. Verizon sends a text two hours before the end. Any use after that starts a new session and a new fee.
  • It can start without you. Verizon's examples are making or answering a call, sending a text, or using data. With data on, app refreshes, email sync and software updates can start one too.
  • Layovers count. Two countries inside one session cost one fee. But if the two countries have different daily fees, the second one starts a new session and a new fee.

Here is how that adds up. Say you land on a Saturday at 8 a.m. and fly home the next Saturday at 2 p.m. If you use the phone on that last morning, you have 8 sessions, not 7. That is $96, not $84.

Cost by trip length

Verizon prices are from its site, and Moosetrip prices are from our catalog. Both are as of October 30, 2026, for one phone used every day.

TripTravelPassVerizon monthlyMoosetrip ItalyMoosetrip JapanMoosetrip Thailand
3 days$36$100$3.50 (1 GB)$4 (1 GB)$5.50 (1 GB)
7 days$84$100$7 (3 GB)$7.50 (3 GB)$9.50 (3 GB)
14 days$168$100$9.50 (5 GB)$10.50 (5 GB)$13 (5 GB)
30 days$360$100$15.50 (10 GB)$17 (10 GB)$19.50 (10 GB)

The 1 GB package lasts 7 days and the others last 30. Days count from your first connection in the destination, not from the day you install.

Our usage numbers lean cautious. 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and rideshare apps, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. So 5 GB is about 25 hours of maps, which is plenty for two weeks of getting around.

This table does not compare equal amounts of data, so here is the fairer version:

  • Same 20 GB: Verizon's monthly plan is $100. Our 20 GB package is $28 in Italy and Japan and $30 in Thailand, without the calling.
  • Very heavy use: TravelPass allows 5 GB of high-speed data every session, or up to 35 GB in a week. Our largest package is 20 GB, and you can add more data to the same eSIM. If you stream all day, TravelPass may be the simpler choice on a short trip.
  • Crossing borders: Our Europe package covers 35 countries, at $7.50 for 3 GB. Our Asia package covers 14 countries, at $10 for 3 GB.

When Verizon is the better choice

Be honest about your trip. Skip the eSIM in these cases:

  • Canada or Mexico on an Unlimited plan. Verizon includes unlimited data, talk and text there. Moosetrip does not sell these two countries as of October 30, 2026. One limit: if more than half of your use in 60 days is there, Verizon may limit it.
  • You have Unlimited Ultimate. Talk, text and data in 210+ destinations are part of the plan, with 15 GB of high-speed international data a month.
  • Your phone is still locked. Under Verizon's policy, effective February 18, 2026, a postpaid phone is released automatically when it was bought at full price or once the financing balance is paid in full. A prepaid phone stays locked until 365 days of paid, active service. If you still owe on the phone, an eSIM from another company will not work on it.
  • You make a lot of regular calls. TravelPass includes local calls and calls back to the US. Our eSIM is internet only and has no phone number.
  • You already have banked days. Verizon's perk costs $10 a month for 3 TravelPass days, and you can store up to 36 for 12 months. Spend them if you have them. Buying the perk only for travel works out to $120 a year.
  • You want nothing to set up. For one day abroad, $12 and no steps may be worth more to you than a small saving.

When an eSIM is the better choice

An eSIM makes sense when you mostly need data, and you are going somewhere that TravelPass charges $12 a day.

  • Trips of 3 days or more. In Italy you save $32.50 against TravelPass on 3 days, and $90.50 against the $100 plan on 14 days.
  • Families. Verizon's charges follow each line used abroad, so four phones for 7 days in Italy cost $336 on TravelPass. Four 3 GB eSIMs cost $28.
  • People who dislike a running meter. You pay once. With data roaming off on the Verizon line, no session starts while you sleep.

The perk math also favors an eSIM for most people. Three days for $10 is about $3.33 a day, so a 7-day trip uses about $23 of perk days. A 3 GB eSIM for Italy is $7.

How to use an eSIM and keep your Verizon number

Your Verizon line stays on the phone as a second line. The trick is to stop it from starting a session.

  1. Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is not locked on our phone check page.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with the QR code. Pick your destination: Italy, Japan or Thailand.
  3. Before you land, turn off data roaming on the Verizon line and set the eSIM as your data line.
  4. Leave the Verizon line on if you need texts. Don't answer calls or send texts on it unless you are fine paying for a session.

Receiving a text is not on Verizon's list of session triggers. That list starts with "such as," though, so we can't promise that a text is always free. If a bank code matters, plan for one possible $12 charge.

Questions

How much is Verizon TravelPass per day?

$12 a day in most of its 210+ destinations and $6 a day in Canada and Mexico, as of October 30, 2026. Canada and Mexico are included at no extra charge on Unlimited plans.

Is the Verizon $100 international plan worth it?

It beats TravelPass from day 9, when TravelPass reaches $108. Verizon itself calls it ideal for trips of 9 days or longer. If you need the 250 minutes, it is a fair deal. If you mostly need data, it costs much more than an eSIM.

Will Verizon charge me if I don't use my phone abroad?

Not for days with no use. But background data can start a session, so leaving data roaming on counts as using the phone. Turn it off if you don't want TravelPass.

What happens after 5 GB on TravelPass?

You keep unlimited data at 3G speeds until that session ends. A new session gives you 5 GB again, or you can buy 2 GB for $10.

Can I use an eSIM on a Verizon phone?

Yes, if the phone supports eSIM and Verizon has released its lock. If you are still paying it off, pay the balance first. Paying with a Verizon Gift Card delays the release by 35 days, so do not leave this for the week before you fly.

Does TravelPass work on a cruise?

Verizon sells a separate Cruise Daily Pass for use at sea, 12 miles or more from land. It costs $20 a day with 0.5 GB of high-speed data, then 3G.
