eSIM Not Working Abroad? Fix It in the Right Order
The eSIM installed fine at home. Now you are off the plane, and your phone says No Service, or the bars are there and nothing loads. When an eSIM is not working abroad, the cause is usually one of three settings: Data Roaming is off on the eSIM line, cellular data is still set to your US line, or the phone is stuck looking for the wrong network. Start with what you see on the screen. The steps below come from Apple, Samsung, and Google help pages.
In short:
- No Service: turn on Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, check that the eSIM line is on, then pick the network by hand.
- Bars but no data: set cellular data to the eSIM, and turn on Data Roaming on that line only.
- Leave Reset Network Settings for last. On an iPhone it can turn data roaming off again.
- Do not delete the eSIM to reinstall it. The QR code often works only once.
First, make sure you are in the right country
A plan for one country will not work during a layover in another. If you are in Doha on the way to Bangkok, a Thailand eSIM has nothing to connect to yet. Our plan days also count from your first connection in the country you are visiting, so a quiet eSIM at a layover has not lost any days.
Next, look at the iPhone prompt. Apple says you may see Turn On Travel eSIM, with a choice of Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM. Apple warns that keeping both lines on can still lead to roaming fees from your home carrier. If you get bank texts on your US number, read how to keep your US number abroad before you choose.
No Service or Searching: the eSIM finds no network
Apple says No Service and Searching both mean the phone is not connected to a cellular network. You may not see SOS at all. Apple lists SOS for Australia, Canada, and the United States only, so abroad you will more likely see No Service.
Work through these in order. The quick ones come first.
- Airplane Mode. Apple says to leave it on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. The phone searches again. Do the same on Galaxy and Pixel.
- The eSIM line is on. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular, tap the line, and tap Turn On This Line if it is off. On Galaxy, check SIM manager under Connections. On Pixel, go to Network & internet > SIMs, open the eSIM, and turn on Use SIM.
- Restart. Apple lists this as the next step.
- Pick the network by hand. Turn off automatic selection on the eSIM line, then choose a network from the table below. On iPhone that is Network Selection. On Galaxy it is Mobile networks > Network operators. On Pixel, open the eSIM and turn off Automatically select network.
- Network type. Apple says that on iPhone 6 or later you should check that Enable LTE is on, under Cellular Data Options. Samsung suggests setting network mode to automatic. On Pixel, open Preferred network type and keep 5G or LTE.
- Updates. Apple suggests the latest iOS and a carrier settings check. Connect to Wi-Fi, go to Settings > General > About, and accept the update if one appears.
Our catalog lists these networks for each destination on 2026-10-30. Names on your phone may look a little different.
| Destination | Networks to pick |
|---|---|
| Italy | TIM, Iliad, Wind |
| Spain | Orange, Movistar |
| United Kingdom | EE, 3 |
| Greece | Wind, Vodafone |
| Portugal | Vodafone, NOS |
| Turkey | Vodafone, Turk Telekom |
| Japan | NTT docomo, KDDI/au, SoftBank, Rakuten Mobile |
| South Korea | SKTelecom, LG Uplus |
| Thailand | AIS, DTAC, TrueMove H |
| Vietnam | Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone |
| Indonesia | Telkomsel, XL, Indosat |
| Georgia | Magti, Beeline, Geocell |
| Egypt | Orange |
| UAE | Du |
On a regional plan such as Europe or Asia, leave selection on automatic unless a network stops working.
Bars but no internet
Signal is there, but pages do not load. The phone can see a network, but data is not going through the eSIM. Check these four things.
- Cellular data is set to the eSIM. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and pick the travel line. Apple gives this exact path for manual switching. On Galaxy, it is SIM manager > Mobile data. On Pixel, go to Network & internet > SIMs and set the preferred SIM for data.
- Data Roaming is on for the eSIM line. A travel eSIM runs on a local network, so your phone treats it as roaming. Apple says that when you travel you should turn on Data Roaming under Cellular Data Options, and that dual SIM users pick the line first. On Galaxy, it sits under Mobile networks. On Pixel, it is the Roaming switch on the eSIM. Leave Data Roaming off on your US line, so that line does not run up roaming charges.
- No data limit is set. A limit you set at home keeps counting abroad. On Galaxy, look under Connections > Data usage. On Pixel, it is Data warning & limit.
- APN, only if the seller gave you one. Enter it on iPhone under Cellular Data Network on the eSIM line, and on Galaxy or Pixel under Access Point Names. If you changed these on a Galaxy and got lost, use Reset to default in the same menu.
Connected but slow
Samsung's guide treats a lack of service as a coverage question once the settings are ruled out. Look at your bars first. Mountains, ferries, and rural roads hurt any SIM.
If the signal looks fine, try these:
- Keep network type on 5G or LTE, not a lower setting.
- Check Battery Saver on a Pixel. Google says it turns off 5G.
- Pick another network from the table.
- Check what is left on your plan. You can add data to the same eSIM, with no reinstall.
Google also notes that Pixel phones with 5G drop to 4G where 5G is not available. No 5G icon on its own is not a fault.
The eSIM failed to install or went missing
It never installed. Common causes are a used or expired QR code and weak Wi-Fi. The other big one is a locked phone. Apple says your iPhone must be unlocked to use a travel eSIM. Check under Settings > General > About: Carrier Lock should read No SIM Restrictions. You can also run our phone check.
It disappeared. It may just be off. A line that is turned off stays on the phone but does not look for a network. Turn it back on with the steps above. If the line is gone from the list on iPhone, Apple sends you to the carrier. For a travel eSIM, that means the company that sold it.
Do not delete the profile and try again. The code often works only once, so you could lose a working plan.
Reset Network Settings: does it delete the eSIM?
Use this only when everything above fails. You will have to enter your hotel Wi-Fi password again.
iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Apple says all network settings are removed and the device name goes back to iPhone. eSIMs are not in that list. A separate Delete All eSIMs item sits in the same menu, and you do not want it. Apple adds that cellular data roaming may turn off, so turn it back on for the eSIM line.
Galaxy. Go to General management > Reset > Reset mobile network settings. The label varies by model. Samsung says saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections are cleared as well.
Pixel. Go to System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. Google's Pixel network page gives the path but does not say what happens to an eSIM, so treat this as a last step.
When to ask for help
If you tried every step for your symptom, contact the company that sold the eSIM. Apple sends you to the carrier to confirm that the account is active, the device is not blocked, and the plan is right. Apple also suggests asking whether the local government requires IMEI registration for phones bought in another country. Have these ready and send them over hotel or cafe Wi-Fi:
- a screenshot of the eSIM line settings, showing Data Roaming and the network chosen
- your phone model and iOS or Android version
- the country and city you are in
- what you tried, and the exact error text
Don't have a travel eSIM yet? A Moosetrip plan installs at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code, and your US number stays on as a second line. On 2026-10-30, Italy starts at $3.50 for 1 GB over 7 days, and 5 GB over 30 days is $9.50. If your US plan already includes the data you need abroad, you may not need one at all.
Questions
Why does my eSIM say No Service abroad?
The phone is not connected to a network. Check that you are in the right country, that the eSIM line is on, and that Airplane Mode has been cycled for at least 15 seconds. Then pick the network by hand.
Does Reset Network Settings remove an eSIM on iPhone?
Apple does not list eSIMs among the items it removes, and Delete All eSIMs is a separate option. Cellular data roaming may turn off, so check it afterward.
Do I need Data Roaming on for a travel eSIM?
Yes, on the eSIM line. The eSIM runs on a local partner network, so the phone sees it as roaming. Keep Data Roaming off on your US line.
Why is there no 5G on my eSIM?
It depends on the network and on your phone. Google says Pixel phones with 5G fall back to 4G where 5G is not available, and that Battery Saver turns 5G off. Maps, messages, and video calls run fine on LTE.
