Internet Speed in Georgia the Country: What to Expect on a Trip
You have a video call booked from Tbilisi, or a work file to send from a guesthouse. Will the connection hold up?
For most trips, yes. Internet speed in Georgia, the country in the Caucasus and not the US state, is strong on mobile. Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for September 2026 put the median mobile download at 147.46 Mbps, 21st in the world. That is about three quarters of the US median.
The surprise is hotel Wi-Fi. Fixed broadband, the line behind most apartment and hotel Wi-Fi, has a median of 51.12 Mbps. So your phone may download faster than your room. Uploads go the other way, and that matters if you send large files.
In short:
- Ookla, September 2026: 147.46 Mbps down, 15.24 up, 19 ms latency on mobile.
- Georgia beats the US median on mobile upload and latency, but not on download.
- Fixed broadband downloads about 3 times slower than mobile, yet uploads about 3.4 times faster.
- A cautious estimate for a video call is about 1.5 Mbps, so the median leaves a wide margin.
Georgia vs the US in numbers
Ookla builds its index from speed tests people run themselves. The figures below are medians, so half of the tests came in faster and half slower. One very fast test barely moves a median. Results update mid-month and cover the previous three months.
| September 2026 index | Georgia | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile download | 147.46 Mbps | 190.59 Mbps |
| Mobile upload | 15.24 Mbps | 9.70 Mbps |
| Mobile latency | 19 ms | 27 ms |
| Mobile world rank | 21st | 11th |
| Fixed download | 51.12 Mbps | 314.35 Mbps |
| Fixed upload | 52.43 Mbps | 72.62 Mbps |
| Fixed latency | 5 ms | 12 ms |
| Fixed world rank | 115th | 7th |
Upload is the speed for sending: photos, files, and your side of a video call. Latency is the delay before the network answers. Lower is better, and you feel it most on calls.
Three things stand out for a US traveler. On mobile, Georgia sends data about 57% faster than the US median and answers 8 ms sooner. Its mobile download is about 23% lower, which you are unlikely to notice on a phone. On fixed lines, the US median download is about 6 times higher. If you are used to fast home internet, the gap will be on your hotel's line.
Is the speed steady?
The median has moved within a narrow band for a year. Here are some index releases.
| Index month | Mobile download | World rank |
|---|---|---|
| September 2025 | 152.13 Mbps | 17th |
| December 2025 | 170.80 Mbps | 15th |
| March 2026 | 161.23 Mbps | 23rd |
| May 2026 | 170.59 Mbps | 18th |
| August 2026 | 147.26 Mbps | 20th |
| September 2026 | 147.46 Mbps | 21st |
Across all 13 releases, download stayed between 147.26 and 170.80 Mbps. Upload peaked at 20.44 Mbps in November 2025 and hit its low of 13.99 Mbps in August 2026, before rising to 15.24. So the last two releases sit near the bottom of the year's range, though well above what a phone needs.
The index gives one figure for the whole country. It does not split Tbilisi from the mountains, 4G from 5G, or one carrier from another. Treat it as a national picture and not a promise for your street.
What your trip actually needs
Our data estimates run high on purpose: 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps and rides, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. Turn those into speed, and you get these rough rates.
| Task | Rate from our estimate | Share of the Georgia mobile median |
|---|---|---|
| Maps and ride apps | About 0.44 Mbps | Under 1% |
| Video calls | About 1.5 Mbps | About 1% |
Say your spot is ten times slower than the median. You still have about 15 Mbps down, about ten times the video call rate.
Upload is the tighter number. Ten times below the median is about 1.5 Mbps, right at that call rate. On a weak signal, your side of the call may suffer first. Run a speed test on both Wi-Fi and mobile data before an important call, and use the faster upload.
For big files, the fixed line usually wins. At the medians, a 100 MB file takes about 52 seconds to send on mobile and about 15 seconds on fixed broadband. That is only a national median, so test your own hotel. For more on where to find it, see our guide to free Wi-Fi in Georgia.
5G in Georgia
Magti says it launched 5G on October 25, 2024, and that a year later the network was available across nearly all of Georgia. That is the carrier's own claim. Its 5G page has a coverage map with separate layers for 2G, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, and 5G, so check your route there before a trip outside the cities.
Magti also says its network ranked 6th in the world for speed in the first two quarters of 2025, citing a Speedtest report. It serves more than 3 million subscribers.
Magti lists three 5G bands:
| Frequency | Band | Width |
|---|---|---|
| 700 MHz | n28 | 2x10 MHz |
| 2600 MHz | n7 | 2x30 MHz |
| 3500 MHz | n78 | 100 MHz |
The carrier quotes a theoretical top speed of 2 Gbps, or 2,000 Mbps. That is more than 13 times the national median, so do not plan around it.
If a 5G phone on a Magti line stays on 4G, Magti gives these steps:
- Update the phone's operating system.
- Turn off Power Saving Mode.
- Select 5G in the network settings.
- Turn on automatic connection to 5G.
Does fast internet use more data?
Not on its own. Magti says the same task uses the same number of megabytes on 5G as on 4G. It also warns that some streaming apps may pick a higher quality on a fast connection, and that burns through a plan much sooner. Set video quality by hand if you are on a small plan.
Speed and plan size are separate questions. Pick your plan by how many hours you will use maps and calls, not by how fast the network is.
Getting data on your phone
If your US plan already includes data in Georgia at a fair price, you may not need anything else. Check before you go. Magti also mentions tourist SIM cards sold at Georgian airports, and our Georgia internet guide compares SIM, eSIM, and roaming.
If you want data ready at landing, a Georgia eSIM from Moosetrip lists Magti, Beeline, and Geocell as its networks. Plan on 4G/LTE. We do not promise 5G on it, and for maps, messages, and calls you do not need it. The Ookla figures cover all subscribers on all networks, so they are not a measure of any one eSIM.
The eSIM is data only, with no phone number. Install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code. Your days start at your first connection in Georgia, and your normal number stays on as a second line. You can add more data to the same eSIM later.
Prices on 2026-10-30:
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 GB, 7 days | $4.50 |
| 3 GB, 30 days | $10 |
| 5 GB, 30 days | $14 |
| 10 GB, 30 days | $26 |
| 20 GB, 30 days | $47.50 |
Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked, so check your phone first.
Questions

On Ookla's September 2026 index, the median mobile speed was 147.46 Mbps down and 15.24 Mbps up, with 19 ms latency. Fixed broadband was 51.12 Mbps down and 52.43 Mbps up.
Is internet in Georgia faster than in the US?
Not on download. The US median is 190.59 Mbps on mobile and 314.35 Mbps on fixed lines. Georgia's mobile network does better on upload, 15.24 Mbps against 9.70, and on latency, 19 ms against 27.
Is mobile data or Wi-Fi faster in Georgia?
For downloads, mobile data usually is, at 147.46 Mbps against 51.12 at the median. For uploads, fixed lines lead, 52.43 Mbps against 15.24. Your hotel may differ, so test both.
Can I work remotely from Georgia?
Going by the medians, yes, for calls and everyday work. Test the upload where you stay before you rely on it, because a big file or a screen share leans on that number.
Does Georgia have 5G?
Yes. Magti launched it on October 25, 2024, and says it now covers nearly all of the country. Check its map for your route.
Will 5G use up my data faster?
Magti says the same task uses the same data on 5G and 4G. Streaming apps may raise quality on a fast network, so set the quality yourself.
