iPhone 17 eSIM Only: Which Models Have No SIM Tray and How to Travel

You land, find the phone shop in arrivals, and buy a local SIM. Then you turn your iPhone over and see there is nowhere to put it. Every iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 17e, and iPhone Air sold in the US is eSIM only. There is no SIM tray, so a plastic local SIM will not fit. The fix is simple: set up your data before you leave. A travel eSIM installs next to your US number, and it starts working when you land.

The same goes for models sold in Canada, Mexico, Japan, and a few other places. Phones sold in most other countries still have a tray, except the iPhone Air, which has no tray anywhere.

In short:

  • US models have no SIM tray: A3258 (17), A3256 (17 Pro), A3257 (17 Pro Max), A3575 (17e), A3260 (Air).
  • Your phone must show "No SIM Restrictions" under Carrier Lock, or a second carrier's eSIM will not work.
  • Two lines can be active at once. Your US number takes calls and texts, and the eSIM carries the data.
  • As of October 30, 2026, a 3 GB Moosetrip package costs $7 in Turkey and $7.50 in Japan.

Which iPhone 17 models have a SIM tray

Apple's model pages make this clear. The tray depends on where the phone was sold, not on which model you picked.

iPhone 17 ProA3256, no trayA3523, nano-SIM tray

iPhone 17eA3575, no trayA3634, nano-SIM tray
iPhone AirA3260, no trayA3517, no tray

Apple's eSIM-only list for these phones covers the US, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, Canada, Mexico, Japan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman. Some of those places use other model numbers, such as A3519 for the iPhone 17 in Canada. All of them have no tray.

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max follow the same rule as the iPhone 17 line.

How to check your own phone

  1. Look at the left side. On phones that have a tray, it sits on the left edge, with a small pinhole next to it. No tray means eSIM only.
  2. Check the model number. Open Settings, then General, then About. Tap the number next to Model Number. It changes to a code that starts with A. Match it to the table above.
  3. Check the lock. On that same About screen, find Carrier Lock. You want to see "No SIM Restrictions."

Step 3 matters most for travel. If the phone is locked to your carrier, a travel eSIM from another company will not work. Phones bought on a payment plan are the usual case. Under Verizon's policy, effective February 18, 2026, a postpaid phone is released when it was bought at full price or once the financing balance is paid. Ask your carrier about your own phone well before you fly. Our phone check page walks through the basics.

Why a tray-free iPhone changes how you travel

For years, the budget move was to buy a plastic SIM at the airport. On a US iPhone 17 that option is gone. You have three choices left.

OptionHow you get itGood to know
Your US carrier's roamingAlready on the phoneOften $12 a day on a daily pass
Local carrier's eSIMCarrier website, app, store, or kioskYou may need to show a passport
Travel eSIMInstalled at home with a QR codeData only, with no phone number

Apple lists all three paths for using an iPhone abroad. Local plans can be good value. In Turkey, for example, Apple's carrier list shows Turkcell, Türk Telekom, and Vodafone with iPhone eSIM service. The catch is the setup: steps differ by carrier, and you may need ID. To compare roaming, local plans, and a travel eSIM on price, see international data plan vs eSIM.

One trap for trips to China: Apple says you can't use an eSIM from a China mainland carrier on a device bought outside China mainland. Sort out data before you go.

How two lines work on an iPhone 17

iPhone 13 and later models support Dual SIM with two eSIMs. You have two active lines at the same time.

  • Calls and texts. Both lines can make and receive calls and send texts. A travel eSIM with no number simply doesn't use that part.
  • Data. Only one line uses cellular data at a time. You pick it in Settings, under Cellular, then Cellular Data.
  • Calls while you're on another call. If you are on a call on one line and someone calls the other, that second line needs Wi-Fi Calling, or Allow Cellular Data Switching turned on. Otherwise it shows No Service, and the caller goes to voicemail with no missed-call alert.

To keep your bank texts coming during the trip, read how to keep your US number abroad. It covers how texts work on the US line.

How to set up a travel eSIM on iPhone 17

Do this at home, days or weeks before the trip. Apple says setup needs Wi-Fi or a hotspot, though it notes that on some eSIM-only models sold in certain places, activation doesn't need Wi-Fi. Don't plan around airport Wi-Fi either way.

  1. Pick your package. Choose a destination such as Turkey, Japan, Thailand, or Italy. Our Europe package covers 35 countries.
  2. Add the eSIM. On iOS 17.4 or later, tap and hold the QR code in your email or browser, then tap Add eSIM. Or scan the code with the Camera app and tap "Cellular Plan Detected." Then tap Continue and Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Leave it alone. Package days start with your first connection in the destination, so an early install costs you nothing.
  4. Before you land, turn off Data Roaming on your US line. Turn it on for the eSIM line.
  5. After you land, set the eSIM as your data line in Settings, under Cellular, then Cellular Data.

If you are on iOS 26 or later, your iPhone may show a "Turn On Travel eSIM" prompt on arrival. You can choose Travel eSIM Only, or keep both lines on. Apple warns that using both may still bring home roaming fees, so look at your carrier's rules before you pick.

When you get home, iOS 26 usually turns the travel eSIM off and brings your home SIM back on its own, depending on your country or region. If it doesn't, open Settings, tap Cellular, check that your main line has Turn On This Line enabled, and turn off the travel line.

What a travel eSIM costs

These Moosetrip prices are from our catalog, as of October 30, 2026.

Destination1 GB, 7 days3 GB, 30 days5 GB, 30 days10 GB, 30 days
Italy$3.50$7$9.50$15.50
Japan$4$7.50$10.50$17
Turkey$3.50$7$9.50$16
Thailand$5.50$9.50$13$19.50
Vietnam$4.50$9.50$14$24

Our usage numbers lean cautious. 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and rideshare apps, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. If data runs low, you can add more to the same eSIM.

You may not need one at all. If your plan already covers data at your destination, such as Verizon Unlimited Ultimate, use it. A travel eSIM is for people who would otherwise pay a daily fee. It also has no number, so if you make a lot of regular calls, a carrier plan or local plan may suit you better.

If you are moving from an older iPhone

Getting the new phone right before a trip? Move your main number first. Quick Transfer needs iOS 18.4 or later on both phones, the same Apple Account, and Bluetooth, and your carrier has to support it. Our guide on how to transfer an eSIM to a new phone has the full steps. Install the travel eSIM after your number works on the new phone, not before.

Questions

Does the iPhone 17 have a SIM card slot in the US?

No. The iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and 17e sold in the US have no tray and work only with eSIM. Versions sold in most other countries have a nano-SIM tray.

Can I put a physical SIM in an iPhone Air?

No. Apple lists no tray on any iPhone Air model, so it uses eSIM wherever it was sold.

Can I use a local SIM abroad with a US iPhone 17?

Not a plastic one. You can use a local carrier's eSIM, if the carrier offers one and your phone is unlocked. You may need to show a passport.

How do I know if my iPhone 17 is unlocked?

Open Settings, then General, then About, and look at Carrier Lock. "No SIM Restrictions" means the phone is unlocked.

Will my US number still work with a travel eSIM?

Yes. It stays on the phone as a second line. Keep Data Roaming off for that line and use the eSIM for data, so that line does not use roaming data.
