Phuket SIM Card or eSIM: What to Sort Out Before You Land

You land in Phuket after a long trip. Your driver is texting you, your hotel address is in an email you never saved, and the phone says no service. You have three ways to fix that: a Thai SIM at the airport, an eSIM installed at home, or roaming with your US carrier.

If your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM, install one before you fly and you skip the counter. If you want unlimited data or a Thai number, a tourist SIM is a good deal and worth the stop. Daily roaming costs the most on a trip of any length.

In short:

  • AIS tourist SIMs cost 499 baht (about $15) for 8 days and 699 baht (about $21) for 15 days, with unlimited data, on 2026-10-30.
  • Bring your physical passport. Tourist SIMs are registered to it.
  • True upgraded 800 sites in Phuket by May 2025. Offshore, plan on patchy signal and download your maps first.
  • A two-week trip fits a 5 GB plan if you are careful. A 10 GB plan leaves room to spare.

The eSIM and the tourist SIM cost about the same here, so the choice comes down to what you value. The SIM gives you unlimited data and a local number. The eSIM gives you a working phone at the gate and no line.

If you lean toward TravelPass, confirm Thailand on Verizon's country list first. If your US plan already includes enough high-speed data in Thailand, keep it. You do not need either one.

Buying a SIM at Phuket Airport

dtac's store guide places its counter in Terminal 2, opposite the arrival gate, as of 2026-09-25. True says its service centers run 24/7 at airport locations, which covers True and dtac. If you land late, that is a good sign, but follow the signs in the hall and do not count on one exact spot. For AIS, ask at the airport information desk.

True and dtac sell the same tourist plans, since True Corporation runs both brands. AIS has its own.

AIS prices were checked on 2026-10-30. The True and dtac prices come from their plan cards on 2026-10-11. The FAQ on the same True page still shows 449 baht for 8 days, so ask to see the current price card before you pay.

All of these plans except the AIS 1-day pass include unlimited data at the top speed available. AIS adds free calls inside its own network and 100 baht of credit for other calls. True and dtac include local calls of up to 15 minutes each.

A 10 to 12 day trip does not fit an 8-day plan. Buy the 15-day one. AIS also sells these plans as an eSIM, up to 30 days.

Three things to do at the counter

  1. Hand over your physical passport. True and dtac register each tourist SIM to a valid passport, and dtac's guide asks for the SIM and its packaging too. A photo of your passport may not be enough.
  2. Ask the exact date and time your plan ends. True says a top-up cannot extend a tourist SIM after it expires. You would need to verify your identity again with your passport.
  3. Before you walk away, turn off Wi-Fi and open a web page. It is much easier to fix a problem at the counter than at your hotel.

A US phone locked to your carrier may refuse a Thai SIM. Staff can test it, and you can check your phone at home first.

Buying a SIM in town

You do not have to buy one at the airport. dtac's guide said on 2026-09-25 that tourist SIMs are sold at all 7-Eleven and Family Mart stores. True also promotes its tourist SIM at 7-Eleven. Ask the clerk which plan lengths are in stock, and have your passport ready, since registration works the same way.

The catch is the first hour. You still need a map, a ride, and a way to reach your hotel before you find a store. The airport Wi-Fi covers some of that gap.

Coverage on beaches and boat trips

The main island is in good shape. In May 2025, True said it had finished upgrading 800 sites in Phuket for True and dtac customers. It reported 5G speeds up 30% and 4G speeds up 18%. Those are island-wide numbers from the carrier, not results for any one beach.

Boat trips are a different story. In February 2026, True launched 5G at Maya Bay on Phi Phi, naming the beach, Loh Samah pier, and the national park office. That is one spot on a long route. Do not expect a signal the whole way out to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay, Racha, or the Similan Islands.

An eSIM uses the same towers as everyone else. Our Thailand plans list AIS, dtac, and TrueMove H, so where those networks have no signal, you have no signal. Before a boat day:

  • Download an offline map of Phuket and each island on your route.
  • Save your guide's number and the pickup time.
  • Charge your phone, and pack a power bank and a waterproof pouch.

Free Wi-Fi at the airport and your hotel

Phuket Airport has free Wi-Fi. Choose the network called AOT Airport Free Wi-Fi by NT, enter an email address, and accept the terms. You get 60 minutes. The airport itself warns against online banking or card payments on public Wi-Fi and says to use cellular data for that.

An hour is enough to message your hotel and book a ride. It is a poor place to install an eSIM for the first time, so do that at home.

Your hotel Wi-Fi is good for big downloads. Before you book, ask whether the signal reaches the rooms, not just the lobby. Once you check in, try a video call from where you plan to make them. On the beach and on boats, you will rely on mobile data and saved maps.

How much data to get for Phuket

Our cautious rule is that 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. Streaming and photo uploads use more, so save those for hotel Wi-Fi.

TripDaily use on mobile dataTotalWhat to pick
2 weeks1 hour of maps, 10-minute video callAbout 4.4 GB5 GB, or 10 GB to be safe
30 days2 hours of maps, 15-minute video callAbout 17 GB20 GB

1 GB7 days$5.50
3 GB30 days$9.50
5 GB30 days$13
10 GB30 days$19.50
20 GB30 days$30

If you run low, you can add data to the same eSIM.

Setting up an eSIM for Phuket

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with its QR code. Days count from your first connection in Thailand, so you can do this well ahead of your flight. Your US number stays on as a second line.

After you land:

  1. In your cellular settings, choose the eSIM for mobile data.
  2. Turn off data roaming on your US line.
  3. If no signal shows up, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, or pick a network by hand.

Step 2 matters. Verizon says a TravelPass session starts by itself when you use your phone with data roaming on, and background app activity can start one. At $12 a day, that is an easy charge to miss. Our guide to keeping your US number abroad covers bank texts on that line.

Flying on from Phuket? Our Asia eSIM covers 14 countries, with 5 GB for $15 on 2026-10-30. Check that every stop is on the list first.

Questions

Which network is best in Phuket?

There is no clear single winner. nPerf ranked TrueMove H first overall in Thailand for 2025, while AIS cites Ookla data putting it ahead on coverage for the first half of 2026. Both are national results. On Phuket itself, True reported its 2025 upgrade.

Can I buy a SIM in Phuket without a passport?

Do not plan on it. True and dtac register tourist SIMs to a valid passport, at the airport and in stores. Bring the original.

Will I have internet on the boat to Phi Phi?

Expect gaps. True confirmed 5G at Maya Bay in February 2026, at the beach, the pier, and the park office. That says nothing about the crossing, so download your maps before you board.

Can a tourist SIM last a whole winter?

Up to a point. AIS sells a 60-day plan at its shops for 1,599 baht (about $47). To keep using the SIM past 60 days, AIS says you must confirm your identity again. True and dtac say their validity cannot exceed 60 days.
