Free Wi-Fi in Thailand: Where It Works and How to Log In

Free Wi-Fi in Thailand is easy to find at airports, big malls, hotels and cafes, but it comes with limits. Airport Wi-Fi gives you 60 minutes after you log in with an email address. The large AIS and True networks you see on your phone want a Thai number.

The weak spot is the first hour. You land, the network shows up, and the login page may not open. Now you are in the arrivals hall with no map and no ride. Hotel Wi-Fi will cover your evenings. It will not help you on the way to the hotel.

In short:

  • Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket and Chiang Mai airports all give 60 minutes of free Wi-Fi with an email login.
  • AIS and True Wi-Fi are for their own customers. The password goes to a Thai number by text.
  • AIS tourist SIMs and True Tourist Infinite plans include those networks.
  • Rides, street maps, beaches and boats need your own data. Hotel Wi-Fi does not reach them.

Wi-Fi at Thai airports

AOT runs Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket and Chiang Mai, and the steps are the same at each:

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi and pick the network. It is AOT Airport Free Wi-Fi by NT, or Airport Free Wi-Fi by NT at Don Mueang.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. Tick "Accept Terms and Conditions."
  4. Confirm. You now have 60 minutes.

An hour is enough to message your hotel, book a ride and download a map. Plan on one session and use it for those three jobs first.

If the login page does not open, tap the network name in your Wi-Fi settings. You can also type an address that starts with http:// in your browser, such as http://captive.apple.com. That usually brings the page up.

At U-Tapao, the airport many people use for Pattaya, the free network is called Free WiFi @ utapao and covers common areas. For more on getting from there to town, see our Pattaya SIM guide.

Do not install an eSIM on crowded airport Wi-Fi if you can avoid it. It is calmer to do that at home.

Wi-Fi in Bangkok malls

Each mall has its own rules.

  • Siam Paragon. Free Wi-Fi runs across the complex, from the G floor up to the fifth floor. It does not cover tenant shops, Paragon Department Store, Paragon Hall or the parking area.
  • Terminal 21 Asok. The mall advertises 100/100 Mbps. First you register at the information counter on the M floor, in the Paris zone. ID may be required, so bring your passport.
  • MBK Center. The mall says its free Wi-Fi works throughout the building.

Plan on no Wi-Fi on the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway. Save your route offline at the hotel, or use mobile data. Our Bangkok SIM guide covers data options by area.

AIS and True Wi-Fi: Thai number needed

Your phone will often list networks with AIS or True in the name. They look free, but they are for customers.

AIS SUPER WiFi is for AIS prepaid and postpaid customers. You dial *388*1# and the password comes by text to your AIS number. One account works on one device. On the .@ AIS SUPER WiFi network, you enter your login and password each time you connect.

TrueWiFi works much the same way. Your TrueMove H number is the account, and you get the password by dialing *871*4#.

So a US phone number will not get you in. A data eSIM will not either, since it has no Thai number.

Tourist SIMs are different. Every AIS tourist plan lists unlimited AIS Super WiFi. The 8-day plan cost 499 baht ($15) on 2026-10-30. True and dtac Tourist Infinite plans for 8, 15 and 30 days include .@TRUEWIFI, .@truemoveH, @ dtac wifi and @ dtac wifi auto.

AIS itself says its Wi-Fi is made for sitting still, in a restaurant or a coffee shop. On the move, it points you to the mobile network, which covers far more ground.

Hotel and cafe Wi-Fi: what speed to expect

Hotels and cafes usually share a fixed line, and fixed internet in Thailand is fast. In the Speedtest Global Index for August 2026, the median fixed connection hit 298.92 Mbps down and 241.83 Mbps up, ninth in the world. Median mobile was 134.45 Mbps down and 24.68 Mbps up.

So uploads run nearly 10 times faster on a fixed line. Send photos and videos to the cloud from your hotel.

These are national medians. Your room can be much slower. AIS explains that Wi-Fi speed drops with a weak signal and with many users on one access point, and a full hotel has both. Test the Wi-Fi on your first evening, while you still have time to download maps and shows.

Before you book, confirm two things: Wi-Fi is included in the price, and it reaches the rooms.

How to use public Wi-Fi safely

Public Wi-Fi is fine for maps and messages. AOT gives clear advice for its airports, and one more tip belongs on the list.

  1. Use only the official network. AOT warns that fake networks can be set up to capture data. Check the name on a sign or ask staff.
  2. Keep banking off public Wi-Fi. AOT says to use mobile data for online banking and card payments.
  3. Never give card details to a login page. Airport Wi-Fi asks only for your email. If a page wants a card number, close it and disconnect.
  4. Forget the network when you finish. Then your phone will not rejoin it on its own later.

When Wi-Fi is not enough

Wi-Fi stays where you sit. You will miss your own data in these places:

  • The first hour after landing. Bags, cash and finding your ride can take more than the free 60 minutes.
  • Taxis. Booking, chatting with the driver and sharing your pin all happen at the curb.
  • Trains and streets. You need the map right at the station.
  • Beaches and boats. There is no one to give you a password at sea. Our Phuket guide covers beaches and boats.
  • Near an AIS or True hotspot. The signal may be strong, but you cannot use it without their SIM.

Add mobile data to your Wi-Fi

A simple split works well. Use hotel Wi-Fi for video, app updates and cloud backups, and keep mobile data for everything outside.

If your US plan already includes data roaming in Thailand at a price you like, you may not need anything else. Check first.

If not, a Thailand eSIM from Moosetrip runs on AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H. It is data only, with no phone number. Install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code, and it connects after you land, at any hour. Days start at your first connection in Thailand, your normal number stays on as a second line, and you can add data to the same eSIM.

With video left to the hotel, data lasts a long time. As a generous estimate, 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps and rides, or 1.5 hours of video calls. Prices on 2026-10-30:

TripPlanPrice
A few days1 GB, 7 days$5.50
1 week3 GB, 30 days$9.50
2 weeks5 GB, 30 days$13

Going on to Vietnam or elsewhere? See the Asia plans. Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked, so check your phone before you buy.

Questions

Is there free Wi-Fi at Bangkok airport?

Yes, at both airports. Suvarnabhumi uses AOT Airport Free Wi-Fi by NT, and Don Mueang uses Airport Free Wi-Fi by NT. You log in with an email address and get 60 minutes.

Can a tourist use AIS or True Wi-Fi?

Only with that company's SIM. The account is tied to a Thai number and the password comes by text. AIS tourist plans and True Tourist Infinite plans include it.

Is hotel Wi-Fi in Thailand good?

Usually. The national median for fixed internet was 298.92 Mbps in August 2026. Your room can be slower when many guests share a network, so test it on your first evening.

Can you get by in Thailand on Wi-Fi alone?

Only if you barely leave the hotel. Rides, street maps, beaches and boats all need your own data, and airport Wi-Fi lasts an hour.

Is there Wi-Fi on the BTS and MRT in Bangkok?

Do not count on it. Save your route offline before you leave the hotel, or keep mobile data on.
