Internet in Turkey for Tourists: What to Use and What It Costs
You land in Dalaman for a week on the coast. The airport's shop list shows no phone store, and the free Wi-Fi lasts 30 minutes. You still need a map and a way to reach your hotel.
Getting internet in Turkey for tourists comes down to three good choices: a data eSIM installed at home, a Turkish tourist SIM bought with your passport, or daily roaming with your US carrier. For a trip of a week or two, a data eSIM is usually the simplest and often the cheapest, because new Turkish lines can carry large one-time charges. A Turkish SIM makes sense if you want a local number and plenty of data. Roaming fits a day or two.
In short:
- Turkcell's tourist pack is 1,800 lira (about $37) for 20 GB over 28 days, and Türk Telekom's plans start at 320 lira (about $7) before new-line charges.
- Verizon TravelPass and AT&T International Day Pass both list $12 a day for one line, so 7 days of use is $84.
- The Moosetrip Turkey eSIM starts at $3.50 for 1 GB over 7 days, and 5 GB for 30 days is $9.50, on 2026-10-30.
- 5G has been live on all three Turkish networks since April 1, 2026.
Internet options in Turkey compared
Dollar amounts for lira prices are rough, at about 49 lira to the dollar. The lira moves often, so check the rate before you buy.
| Option | Price | What you get | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkcell Tourist Welcome Pack | 1,800 lira ($37) | 20 GB, 200 local minutes, 28 days | Up to 4 weeks, widest coverage |
| Vodafone Welcome to Turkey | No pack fee, SIM fee varies by shop | 20 GB, 750 minutes, 28 days | Up to 4 weeks, local number |
| Türk Telekom Tourist Welcome | 320 to 550 lira ($7 to $11), plus new-line charges | 10 GB to 75 GB, minutes and texts | Heavy data users |
| Verizon or AT&T daily pass | $12 per day for one line | Your US number, talk, text, and data | A day or two |
| Moosetrip eSIM | $3.50 to $31.50 | Data only, 1 GB to 20 GB | Most trips of 3 to 30 days |
| Free Wi-Fi | $0 | 30 to 60 minutes at some airports, plus hotels and cafes | Backup |
Roaming with your US carrier
Roaming needs no setup, and your normal number keeps working. Verizon lists TravelPass at $12 per day, per line, outside Mexico and Canada, with 5 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour session. AT&T lists International Day Pass at $12 per day for one line, plus $6 for each extra line used that day, for customers on an unlimited plan. Confirm Turkey and the rate in your carrier app before you fly.
For one line, 7 days of use is $84 and 14 days is $168. Our 10 GB plan for Turkey is $16 for up to 30 days, though a daily pass also includes calls and texts.
Some US plans include travel data. If yours covers Turkey and gives you enough high-speed data, keep it. You do not need an eSIM.
Turkish tourist SIMs: Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom
Turkey (also written Türkiye) has three mobile operators. All sell plans made for visitors, and these were checked on 2026-10-30.
| Operator | Data | Minutes | Valid for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turkcell | 20 GB | 200 | 28 days | 1,800 lira |
| Vodafone | 20 GB | 750 | 28 days | No pack fee, SIM fee varies |
| Türk Telekom | 10 GB | 250 | 7 days | 320 lira |
| Türk Telekom | 75 GB | 750 | 15 days | 550 lira |
| Türk Telekom | 25 GB | 750 | 28 days | 420 lira |
| Türk Telekom | 50 GB | 1,500 | 28 days | 550 lira |
Read those prices with care, because the plan price may not be the full price.
- Türk Telekom: its fee page, checked 2026-10-11, listed 700 lira of tax and 323.81 lira for a radio license on a new line. That makes the 7-day plan about 1,344 lira, or roughly $27, in total.
- Vodafone: the pack has no fee, but the SIM fee "may vary from shop to shop."
- Turkcell: the 1,800 lira is a recommended price, and the offer runs to December 31, 2026.
Türk Telekom plans are one-time and do not renew. Its 25 GB plan includes free WhatsApp messaging. Vodafone's pack includes unlimited WhatsApp data.
Turkcell also takes online orders up to 90 days before you arrive, and Vodafone issues eSIMs at its shops. We compare those carrier eSIMs in our guide to eSIM for Turkey tourists.
Before you pay at any shop, ask for the full total with all taxes and fees. Your phone must be unlocked to use a Turkish SIM, and it needs a tray for a plastic one. You can check your phone here.
Which network is best in Turkey
Turkcell leads on coverage. In Opensignal's June 2025 report, with data from March 1 to May 29, 2025, coverage scored 7.5 out of 10 for Turkcell, 5.9 for Vodafone, and 5.3 for Türk Telekom. Turkcell also won on download and upload speed, and Vodafone won on consistent quality and reliability.
Our Turkey plans list the Vodafone and Türk Telekom networks, not Turkcell. If you are heading far off the main routes and coverage matters most, that is worth weighing.
Commercial 5G started on April 1, 2026, on all three networks. In Opensignal's first 30 days of data, 5G users downloaded at an average of 201.3 Mbps, against 38.5 Mbps on 4G. Turkcell was fastest, at about 249 Mbps. Vodafone users spent the most time on 5G, at 66%. P3's drive tests across 81 provinces in early April 2026 gave Vodafone the widest 5G coverage.
On a Turkish SIM, you turn on 5G by texting "5G" to 7000 on Vodafone, 5555 on Türk Telekom, or 2200 on Turkcell.
Airports: where you can buy, and when
Hours vary a lot, so check your airport before you rely on a counter. These details are from each airport's site on 2026-10-09.
| Airport | SIM counters | Hours | Free Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul (IST) | Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom in arrivals | 24 hours | Unlimited, sign in by SMS code or passport kiosk |
| Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) | All three in arrivals | Vodafone 9:00 to 21:00, others not listed | 1 hour |
| Antalya (AYT) | Vodafone, Türk Telekom | 8:00 to 23:00 | 1 hour, PIN from a kiosk |
| Dalaman (DLM) | None listed | Not applicable | 30 minutes, password from a kiosk |
Istanbul Airport's five SIM points in arrivals stay open all night, in the public area after you exit. Our Istanbul Airport SIM card guide has the details.
The resorts are where people get stuck. Antalya had no Turkcell shop on its list, and Dalaman had no phone shops at all. If you land late on the Mediterranean coast, an eSIM installed at home means no counter hours to worry about.
Do you need to register your phone?
Not on a normal vacation. Turkey's regulator, BTK, says a phone brought from abroad can be used for 120 days from your entry date without registration, checked 2026-10-11. After that, an unregistered phone is cut off from Turkish networks. This rule matters only for long stays.
Travel eSIM for Turkey
An eSIM is a digital SIM. You install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code, and your regular number stays on as a second line. Days count from your first connection in Turkey, so you can set it up well before the flight.
Two limits apply. Your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to your carrier. And our eSIM is internet only, with no phone number.
Our Turkey plans list the Vodafone and Türk Telekom networks. Prices on 2026-10-30:
| Data | Valid for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $3.50 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | $7 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $9.50 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $16 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $31.50 |
To size your plan, use a cautious rule: 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. An hour of maps a day for 7 days is about 1.4 GB, so 3 GB leaves room. For 14 days with a 30-minute video call each day, you need about 7.5 GB, so take 10 GB. If you run low, you can add data to the same eSIM.
Wi-Fi in hotels and cafes
Hotel Wi-Fi saves data, but it does not help in a taxi or on a tour. Download offline maps before you head out, and skip banking on open networks. If a login page does not appear, tap the network name in your settings.
Questions
What is the best way to get internet in Turkey as a tourist?
For most US travelers on a short trip, a data eSIM installed at home is the simplest. Choose a Turkish SIM if you need a local number or a lot of data. Keep your US plan if it already covers Turkey.
Which network is best for tourists in Turkey?
Turkcell has the widest coverage in Opensignal's data, at 7.5 out of 10. Vodafone scored better for consistent quality.
Can I buy a SIM at Istanbul Airport at night?
Yes. The airport listed its SIM points in arrivals as open 24 hours on 2026-10-09. Antalya's shops close at 23:00.
Will I keep my US number with an eSIM?
Yes. It stays on as a second line. Turn off data roaming on that line so you do not start a daily pass by accident.
