eSIM for Turkey: What a Tourist Should Buy and Where

You land in Antalya late at night. Your ride is waiting somewhere outside, and you need a map right now. Antalya Airport lists Vodafone and Turk Telekom shops open from 8:00 to 23:00, and no Turkcell shop. If you arrive after that, a store SIM has to wait.

For a US traveler on a trip of 7 to 14 days, the simplest eSIM for Turkey is a data-only travel eSIM installed at home. Your US number stays on the phone as a second line. A Turkish eSIM makes sense if you want a local number, heavy data, or phone calls inside Turkey. If your US plan already includes Turkey, you may not need anything.

In short:

  • Turkcell lets you apply online up to 90 days before you arrive. Vodafone hands out its eSIM in a shop. Turk Telekom's tourist page sells a regular SIM at airport dealers and stores.
  • Turk Telekom's 7-day pack is 320 lira, but a new line adds 1,023.81 lira in tax and license fees, on 2026-10-11.
  • Verizon TravelPass and AT&T International Day Pass both list $12 a day, so 7 days of use is $84.
  • The Moosetrip Turkey eSIM is $9.50 for 5 GB over 30 days, on 2026-10-30.

Turkish eSIM and SIM rules by operator

Turkcell

Turkcell is the one to look at if you want a Turkish eSIM before you fly. You pick a package, enter your passport details and arrival date, confirm the codes sent to your email and phone, and pay with a credit card that works for international online payments. A line can be bought up to 90 days before or after arrival.

You can activate it inside the Turkcell app if your phone supports both eSIM and NFC and your passport has a chip. If not, you activate it at any Turkcell store in Turkey within 90 days of applying. Miss that window and the order is canceled and refunded. Turkcell also warns that the app can return an error if your face does not match the chip photo. Then a store visit is the fallback.

The Tourist Welcome Pack was 1,800 lira for 20 GB and 200 minutes over 28 days, on 2026-10-11, with the offer listed through December 31, 2026. Ask whether that total covers the new line fees. Turkcell says there are no limits on using your phone as a hotspot, and the package works only in Turkey.

Vodafone

Vodafone takes a short online form with your name, passport number, and the city you are visiting. You still pick up the SIM or eSIM at a Vodafone shop, including airport shops. The shop sets the price of the line, and Vodafone says that fee can vary by location.

The Welcome to Turkey Pack comes with a new line at no extra charge. It includes 20 GB of data and 750 minutes on the Vodafone network for 28 days.

Turk Telekom

Turk Telekom's tourist page does not mention eSIM. It sends you to a store or an airport dealer for a local prepaid SIM. Packs on 2026-10-30:

PackDataMinutes and SMSValid forPrice
Welcome 10GB10 GB250 and 2507 days320 lira

Welcome 25GB25 GB750 and 75028 days420 lira
Welcome 50GB50 GB1,500 and 1,00028 days550 lira

These packs do not renew on their own. The fee to watch is separate. Turk Telekom's 2026 help page lists 700 lira of tax and 323.81 lira for the radio license, taken when a new line starts. So the 7-day pack comes to 1,343.81 lira in all, and the 15-day pack comes to 1,573.81 lira.

Before you pay at any shop, ask for the full total with the line, tax, and license fee. Bring your passport and your phone. If your US phone is locked to a carrier, a Turkish SIM may not work.

Moosetrip eSIM$9.50$165 GB, then 10 GB

Verizon and AT&T passes include calls and texts on your US number. Our eSIM is data only, so the match is not exact. AT&T adds $6 for each extra line used on the same day. Verizon calls its $100 plan ideal for trips of 9 days or longer. That plan also has 250 minutes and unlimited texts.

Watch the fallback rate. Without a pass or a monthly plan, Verizon lists Turkey at $1.79 a minute and $2.05 per MB. Confirm Turkey and the rate in your carrier app before you fly.

Also watch running out on a Turkish line. Vodafone and Turk Telekom both charge 2 kuruş per 100 KB once a pack is gone. That is about 200 lira per GB, so a new pack is the better move.

If you are on Verizon Unlimited Ultimate, calls, texts, and data are already included in more than 210 countries, with speed cut to 1.5 Mbps after 15 GB in a month. In that case, keep your plan and skip the eSIM.

Which network is best in Turkey

Opensignal's last full Turkey report came out in June 2025, with tests from March 1 to May 29 of that year.

MeasureTurkcellTurk TelekomVodafone
Typical download speed48.1 Mbps33.6 Mbps28.2 Mbps
Reliability score, out of 1,000911908920
Time with a connection98.7%98.9%98.5%

So Turkcell led on speed, and Vodafone led narrowly on reliability. The gaps in reliability and availability are small. All three should cover normal maps and calls in the places people usually go.

Newer numbers exist for the country as a whole. Ookla's Speedtest Global Index put Turkey's median mobile download at 133.01 Mbps for August 2026, 29th in the world. Opensignal's September 2026 look at the first months of 5G found 5G phone users got 38.2 Mbps on 4G and 216.6 Mbps on 5G.

Our Turkey plan lists the Vodafone and Avea/Turk Telekom networks. We do not promise 5G on it. If data crawls, try picking the network by hand in the settings for that line.

nPerf builds its map from user tests over two years. This table shows the network type seen most often within about 150 meters of each spot, on 2026-10-11.

How to set up a travel eSIM for Turkey

  1. Check your phone. It must support eSIM and must not be locked to your carrier.
  2. Pick a plan on our Turkey page.
  3. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with the QR code. Days count from your first connection in Turkey, so installing early uses nothing.
  4. After landing, choose that line for cellular data and turn on data roaming for it.
  5. Turn off data roaming on your US line. Verizon says background activity can start a paid session on its own.

Prices on 2026-10-30:

DataValid forPrice
1 GB7 days$3.50
3 GB30 days$7
5 GB30 days$9.50
10 GB30 days$16
20 GB30 days$31.50

To size a plan, use a cautious rule: 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. Two hours of maps a day plus a 20-minute video call comes to about 4.4 GB over 7 days, so pick 5 GB. Over 14 days that is about 8.7 GB, so pick 10 GB. If you run low, you can add data to the same eSIM.

Questions

Do tourists need a Turkish phone number?

Most do not. Hotels and drivers can often be reached through messaging apps over data, and your US number stays on your phone. A Turkish number helps if you need to take local calls or receive codes sent only to Turkish numbers.

Can I buy a Turkish eSIM before my trip?

Yes, from Turkcell, up to 90 days before you arrive. Vodafone takes the form online but gives you the eSIM in a shop. Turk Telekom's tourist page does not offer eSIM.

Do I need to register my phone in Turkey?

Not on a normal vacation. Turkey's telecom regulator, BTK, says a phone brought from abroad works without registration for 120 days from your entry date. After that, an unregistered phone is cut off from the network.

Will I keep my US number with an eSIM?

Yes. Your regular number stays on as a second line. Check what your US carrier charges for calls and texts abroad, or you may pay roaming fees on that line.

What happens if my data runs out?

On a Moosetrip eSIM, you add data to the same eSIM and do not reinstall anything. On a Turkcell line, you top up in the Turkcell app.

Can I use a Turkish eSIM as a hotspot?

Turkcell says yes, with no restrictions on hotspot use. Its package works only inside Turkey.
