Istanbul Airport SIM Card: IST, Sabiha Gokcen, and What to Do Instead
You walk out of customs in Istanbul and your phone has no data. The free airport Wi-Fi wants a code sent by text, or a passport scan at a kiosk. Your ride is waiting, and you still have no map.
Getting an Istanbul airport SIM card is simple at IST: Turkcell, Vodafone, and Türk Telekom all have points on the arrivals floor, and the airport lists them as open around the clock. At Sabiha Gokcen (SAW), plan more carefully, because Vodafone's shop closes at 9 p.m. and free Wi-Fi lasts just one hour. If your phone supports eSIM, you can skip all of this by installing a data eSIM at home and turning it on after you land.
In short:
- IST has five SIM points on the arrivals floor, all listed as open 24/7 on October 9, 2026.
- At SAW, the Vodafone shop listed 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily on October 9, 2026.
- IST Wi-Fi is free and unlimited, but you need a text code or a kiosk code. SAW gives you 1 hour free.
- The Moosetrip Turkey eSIM starts at $3.50 for 1 GB over 7 days, and 5 GB for 30 days is $9.50, on 2026-10-30.
SIM, eSIM, or Wi-Fi: how they compare
| Counter at IST | Counter at SAW | City shop | Moosetrip eSIM | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| When | 24/7 | Vodafone 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. | Shop hours | Installed at home, on after landing |
| You need | Passport | Passport | Passport | Unlocked phone with eSIM support |
| Your US number | Out of the phone if you have one slot | Same | Same | Stays on as a second line |
| Local number | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
A Turkish SIM makes sense if you want a local number for calls inside Turkey. An eSIM makes sense if you only need data and would rather not line up after a long flight from the US.
Your US carrier is the third path. Verizon lists TravelPass at $12 a day in most countries, and AT&T lists International Day Pass at $12 a day for one line, so a 7-day stay is $84. Those passes include calls and texts, and they can be worth it for a one-day layover. Confirm Turkey and the rate in your carrier app first. If your plan already covers Turkey with enough high-speed data, you may not need anything else. Our TravelPass breakdown shows how the days add up.
Istanbul Airport (IST): where to buy a SIM
The airport's shop directory, read on October 9, 2026, shows five points that sell SIMs on the arrivals floor, in the public area after you exit:
| Point | Where | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Turkcell, two points | Arrivals hall | 24/7 |
| Vodafone | Arrivals hall, domestic side | 24/7 |
| Wifist Vodafone | Arrivals hall, international side | 24/7 |
| Türk Telekom | Arrivals hall, domestic side | 24/7 |
Coming from the US, you will exit on the international side, so Wifist Vodafone is the natural first stop. The same floor has an Airport WiFi counter that rents pocket routers from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Keep your passport handy. Turkcell says a valid passport is the only document it accepts for a tourist line, and national ID cards do not count. Ask for the full total in lira before you pay, then turn off Wi-Fi and open a map while you are still at the counter.
Check your phone before you line up, too. A plastic SIM needs a physical tray, and the phone must be unlocked. If your phone has no tray, a plastic SIM will not help you. You can check your phone here.
Turkcell's tourist line
Turkcell also sells a tourist line you apply for online. A few rules are worth knowing:
- You can pick up a physical SIM free at any Turkcell store in Turkey.
- An eSIM is available too. Activating it in the app needs a phone with both eSIM and NFC, and a biometric passport with a chip.
- Payment needs a card that works for international online purchases.
- Turkcell says you can buy the line only within 90 days before or after you arrive.
Free Wi-Fi at Istanbul Airport
Wi-Fi at IST is free for passengers, and the airport describes it as unlimited. The network is iGA WiFi. You can get on in two ways:
- By text. Choose Login with Mobile, enter your phone number, and type in the password sent by SMS.
- By kiosk. Scan your passport or ID at a terminal kiosk, get an access code, and enter it under Login with Access Code.
If you keep your US line off to avoid roaming, or the text does not arrive, go to the kiosk. A text reaching your US line falls under your carrier's roaming rules, and our guide on keeping your US number abroad covers what to ask.
Turkish Airlines passengers also have TK WiFi. You can log in by SMS, or with your ticket number, seat, and last name after check-in.
Mobile data is much faster here. Ookla measured a median Wi-Fi download speed of 22.65 Mbps at IST for January to August 2025. Its 2024 figure for mobile networks at IST was 314.84 Mbps.
Sabiha Gokcen (SAW): SIM and Wi-Fi
SAW is the city's second airport, on the Asian side. Its shopping page lists Türk Telekom, Turkcell, and Vodafone on the arrivals level.
Vodafone's own store list gave the SAW shop 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily on October 9, 2026. If you land at night, do not count on it. This is the airport where an eSIM set up at home pays off most.
The airport gives passengers 1 hour of free internet. Ookla put SAW's median Wi-Fi download speed at 9.69 Mbps for January to August 2025, last of the nine airports in its report. Mobile networks at SAW reached 78.67 Mbps in 2024. An hour is enough to book a ride. For the trip to your hotel, use your own data.
Where to buy a SIM in Istanbul
If you skip the airport, you have plenty of choices. Vodafone counted 789 points in Istanbul on October 9, 2026, and 152 of them were full stores. Here are a few that list new line sales:
| Vodafone store | Area | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Beyoglu Han, No. 88, Istiklal Street | Beyoglu | Ask at the store |
| Cevahir Mall, Buyukdere Street, floor 1 | Sisli | Daily, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Istinye Park, floor -2 | Sariyer | Daily, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Muhurdar Street 34A | Kadikoy | Daily, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
Turkcell issues tourist SIMs at any of its stores. Türk Telekom says it sells them through its stores and through dealers at the airport.
With one SIM slot, a Turkish SIM takes the place of your US SIM. Bank codes sent to your US number will not reach you until you swap back.
Free city Wi-Fi: IBB Wi-Fi
The city of Istanbul runs a free network called IBB Wi-Fi. It has no data limit. The city's telecom company says it covers squares, streets, parks, sports and cultural centers, universities, hospitals, and public transit, for residents and tourists alike.
You can only get on through the city's app: download it, register, and verify your identity. Do that on hotel Wi-Fi on your first evening, not on a street corner. Find access points on the city map or in the app.
Keep passwords and card details off open networks. Use mobile data for payments, and save hotel Wi-Fi for updates and offline maps.
Metro, Marmaray, and ferries
Plan your route above ground, before you go down. A route you have already started stays on the screen if the signal drops. Download an offline map of Istanbul on hotel Wi-Fi so you can still find your way on a ferry or on the Princes' Islands.
To check your own neighborhood, open the nPerf map of Istanbul. It has separate layers for Turkcell, Vodafone, and Türk Telekom, built from user tests over two years. Our Turkey eSIM lists Vodafone and Türk Telekom, so check those two layers.
A travel eSIM for Istanbul
An eSIM is a digital SIM. You install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code, and days count from your first connection in Turkey. Your regular number stays on as a second line, so bank texts can still reach you.
Our Turkey plans list the Vodafone and Avea/Türk Telekom networks. Prices on 2026-10-30:
| Data | Valid for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $3.50 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | $7 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $9.50 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $16 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $31.50 |
After you land, set the eSIM as your line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line. Turn data roaming off on your US line so it does not start a daily pass.
To size your plan, use a cautious rule: 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps, or about 1.5 hours of video calls.
- Long weekend: 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps.
- One week: 3 GB covers about 15 hours of maps.
- One week with video calls home: 5 GB leaves room for about 3 hours of calls on top of those maps.
- Two weeks or more: 10 GB is a safer pick.
If you run low, you can add data to the same eSIM. The eSIM is internet only, with no Turkish number. If you need one, buy a local SIM.
Questions
Are SIM shops at Istanbul Airport open at night?
At IST, the airport listed all five points on the arrivals floor as open 24/7 on October 9, 2026. At SAW, Vodafone listed 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., so a late arrival may find it closed.
How do I use Istanbul Airport Wi-Fi without a Turkish number?
Pick iGA WiFi. You can get a password by SMS on your own number, or scan your passport at a kiosk and use the code it gives you.
Do I need a passport to buy a SIM in Istanbul?
Yes. Turkcell says a valid passport is the only document it accepts for a tourist line, so carry yours.
Does Sabiha Gokcen have free Wi-Fi?
Yes, but only for 1 hour, and it was the slowest of nine airports in Ookla's report for January to August 2025.
Is there free Wi-Fi in Istanbul?
Yes. IBB Wi-Fi is free with no data limit, but you must register in the city's app first.
Does an eSIM work in Istanbul?
Yes, if your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Our Turkey plan lists the Vodafone and Türk Telekom networks.
Will I keep my US number with an eSIM?
Yes. It stays on as a second line. Check what your carrier charges for calls and texts in Turkey, or you may pay roaming fees on that line.
