Uber in Japan: How It Works, What It Costs, What to Use Instead

You land at Haneda, open Uber, and the map keeps searching. Or a local taxi app wants a code sent to your phone before it shows a car. Here is the short answer on Uber in Japan. It works, but mostly as a way to book a licensed taxi. There is no UberX. In Tokyo, Uber lists Taxi plus Premier cars with flat fares. A taxi booked through Uber costs the meter fare plus a ¥100 app charge and a booking fee of up to ¥500.

So the app rarely saves money. In central Tokyo, a street taxi is often simpler, and Narita's rank has fixed fares by zone. Any app also needs mobile data outside the terminal, where you meet your car.

Prices are in yen, checked on 2026-11-06, with dollars at a rough ¥150 to $1. Moosetrip sells eSIMs and has not tested these apps. Facts come from the pages under Sources.

In short:

  • Uber in Japan: Taxi, Premier, Premier EV, Premier Van, Hourly Premier, and Assist. No UberX.
  • An Uber Taxi costs the meter fare plus ¥100 and a booking fee of up to ¥500 in Tokyo, or up to ¥680 at Kansai Airport.
  • Narita's fixed taxi fare to Shinjuku, Shibuya, or most of Minato is ¥31,500 via Keiyo Road, plus tolls.
  • GO, the most used taxi app in Japan by its own claim, covers all 47 prefectures and takes international credit cards and Apple Pay.

What Uber offers in Japan

Uber's pages for Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) list up to six ride options. Taxi and Assist are licensed taxis. The Premier options are cars with professional drivers.

OptionWhat you getSeatsMinato to Narita, averageMinato to Haneda, average
TaxiLicensed taxi, meter fare4¥33,116 (about $221)¥9,206 (about $61)
PremierPremium car, flat fare4¥36,892¥8,925
Premier EVPremium electric car, flat fare4¥35,643¥9,247
Premier VanVan, flat fare5¥38,203¥10,177
Hourly PremierCar with driver, by the hour4¥45,667¥16,080
AssistWheelchair-accessible taxi2¥33,520Not listed

Minato is a central Tokyo ward. Uber says these are past-month averages, not fixed or guaranteed prices. The Haneda trip averaged 27 minutes and 17 km.

At Haneda, Premier averaged a little less than Taxi, ¥8,925 against ¥9,206. A Premier fare is set before you ride, while the taxi meter can run past the estimate, and Uber says the Premier EV price there includes highway tolls. Compare both in the app.

How Uber prices work in Japan

  • Taxi. The fare is what the meter shows at the end, and it may be higher than the estimate. Uber adds a ¥100 app usage charge and a separate booking fee of up to ¥500.
  • Premier classes. Flat fares apply. Adding a stop can switch you to the regular rate.
  • Demand. Uber says prices depend on trip length, tolls, city fees, and demand. A ride reserved ahead locks in the price and avoids surge pricing.
  • Reserve. You can book up to 90 days ahead for airport trips. Cancellation is free until an hour before pickup.

So for taxis, the answer to "uber in japan price" is the normal fare plus up to ¥600 in app fees. Tokyo's official tourism site says taxi fares start at ¥500 in most cases.

Does your US Uber account and card work?

Uber's Japan pages don't mention payment methods, foreign cards, or foreign phone numbers, so we can't confirm it. Before you fly, sign in, keep a card on file, and check whether it adds a foreign transaction fee.

GO's English page is clearer: it says international credit cards and Apple Pay are accepted. DiDi takes a credit card, debit card, or PayPay in its app, but its English page doesn't say whether US cards work.

What about ride-sharing with private cars?

You may read that Japan opened up to ride-sharing in 2024. In 2026, DiDi's Japanese site recruits drivers for Japanese-style ride-share, and Uber's airport pages mention a "Private car" with no price. Neither tells a visitor how to book one. Plan on taxis.

GO claims more than 35 million installs as of January 2026. You sign up with a verification code. Its page mentions users verified with non-Japanese phone numbers, so a US number appears to work, though GO is ending coupons for them. Sign up at home, where the code is sure to arrive.

DiDi says it charges no app commission, but a pickup fee and an advance booking fee may apply. It lists an average pickup of 5 minutes across Japan in 2025.

S.RIDE books Tokyo taxis and lets you pay by scanning a QR code in the car.

Narita Airport: fixed taxi fares

Narita's own site lists fixed fares to Tokyo's 23 wards and nearby cities. You pay highway tolls on top.

  • A late-night surcharge applies from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., amount not given.
  • The Aqua-Line costs extra. Without the expressway, you pay the meter.
  • No reservation needed. Ask the driver about the fare before you get in.
  • Taxi stands: No. 15 in Terminal 1, No. 28 and No. 31-A in Terminal 2, and the taxi stand in Terminal 3.

The page carries no date, so treat these as the fares listed on 2026-11-06. Uber's average Taxi from Minato was ¥33,116. The rank needs no app, no booking fee, and no data.

Haneda Airport: where app rides pick you up

Since October 22, 2025, Haneda sends app and reserved taxis to separate stands, away from the regular ones on the ground floor:

TerminalApp and reserved taxi stand
Terminal 12F, near Exit 7
Terminal 22F, near Exit 2
Terminal 38th floor of P5 Parking

The airport warns these spots may change when it gets busy, so check the app. Regular taxis wait on the 1F arrival level, at stop 21 in Terminal 3.

Haneda also has flat-rate taxis approved by Japan's transport ministry, with tolls on top. Its site lists no prices, and the Tokyo taxi association's site would not connect for us, so we quote none.

Osaka and Kyoto

Uber's taxi list includes Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. GO covers every prefecture.

At Kansai Airport (KIX), Uber lists fewer options than in Tokyo:

OptionOsaka to KIX, average
Taxi¥24,274 (about $162)
Priority Taxi¥25,073
Assist¥24,151
Premier Van¥30,135, tolls included

The trip averaged 47 minutes and 51 km. Priority Taxi promises a faster match and includes a priority fee of up to ¥1,000. On top of the meter, taxis add a booking fee of up to ¥680 and a facility usage fee.

In Kyoto, DiDi started large wagons on October 29, 2026, which helps a group with bags. We could not check Kyoto's taxi stands or fares, so ask your hotel where taxis wait.

When a street taxi is easier

  • Central Tokyo. Tokyo's tourism site says a taxi is never far away. 空車 in the window means the cab is free. Have your address written in Japanese.
  • Narita. The fixed fare at the rank is clear, with no app fees.
  • No data. A street taxi needs nothing from your phone.

We found no 2025 or 2026 rule on cards in street taxis. Ask before you get in, and carry some yen.

Why taxi apps fail without mobile data

  • The app has to see where you are. At Haneda, the pickup is on 2F or a parking floor, and it can move.
  • Your ride is confirmed only when the driver's details arrive, and Uber doesn't promise anyone will accept.
  • You may need to message the driver to find each other.

Both airports have free Wi-Fi in the terminals, covered in our Narita and Haneda guides. Your car waits at the curb or in a parking garage, where we can't promise it reaches.

Mobile data for taxi apps in Japan

If your US plan already covers Japan at a price you like, keep it. Local SIMs and US roaming passes are compared in our Japan SIM card guide.

A Moosetrip eSIM for Japan is data only and runs on NTT docomo, KDDI/au, SoftBank, and Rakuten Mobile. You install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code. The days start at your first connection in Japan, and your US number stays on as a second line. Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked, so check your phone first.

As a generous estimate, 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps. Prices on 2026-11-06:

PlanPrice
1 GB, 7 days$4
3 GB, 30 days$7.50
5 GB, 30 days$10.50
10 GB, 30 days$17

If you run low, add data to the same eSIM. Install Uber and GO and sign in while you are still at home.
