Havaist Bus From Istanbul Airport: Routes, Fares, and How to Ride

You land at Istanbul Airport with two suitcases and a hotel across the city. The Havaist bus is the simple way in. It runs 11 routes from the airport, you board on Transportation Floor -2, and your bags ride underneath. A ticket to Taksim or Sultanahmet cost 470 lira on October 19, 2026, and the trip takes about 90 to 110 minutes.

There is one thing to plan for. Timetables, live bus tracking, and online tickets all need the internet. If you land with no data, you still have the signs and your credit card, which works on board.

In short:

  • Board on Transportation Floor -2. Each route has its own platform: Taksim 16, Sultanahmet 11, Kadıköy 14, Aksaray 12.
  • Fares ran from 350 to 515 lira on October 19, 2026.
  • Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover are on the Havaist card list. City lines do not take cash.
  • Two medium suitcases ride free. Each extra piece was 120 lira.

Moosetrip sells eSIMs, so keep that in mind as you read. We have not ridden these buses as a test. Everything below comes from the operator and airport pages listed at the end. Fares appear in lira, the way Havaist lists them, because your card's exchange rate sets the final dollar cost.

Where to catch the Havaist bus at Istanbul Airport

From the arrivals hall, follow the Havaist signs down to Transportation Floor -2. The airport names this floor as the boarding point. The buses wait at numbered platforms.

City İETT buses use the same floor and run 5 routes of their own. So check the platform number before you hand over your suitcase.

Havaist routes, platforms, and fares

Line codes and fares below come from the Havaist timetable on October 19, 2026. Old guidebooks may show other line numbers, so match your route by its last stop.

These are average times from Havaist itself. The operator says posted times are departures from the main stop, and arrival at later stops depends on traffic.

The Taksim line runs two ways. Buses marked orange on the hava.ist timetable stop at 4. Levent, Zincirlikuyu, and Beşiktaş. The others run express and skip all three. HVL-4 splits the same way: some buses go through Bakırköy pier, others through Merter.

Havaist schedule and night buses

All departures appear on hava.ist under "Sefer Saatleri," or schedule times. Pick your start and end point, and the site shows times, platform, travel time, and fare. These times were read on October 19, 2026.

  • Taksim, HVL-9: 30 buses a day. Every 40 to 45 minutes in the daytime. At night, 12:30, 1:15, and 2:15 a.m., then nothing until 4:30 a.m.
  • Sultanahmet, HVL-13: 5:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., every 45 to 60 minutes. No night buses.
  • Kadıköy, HVL-6: About every 75 minutes, around the clock.
  • Aksaray, HVL-1: Every 40 to 45 minutes in the daytime. At night, 12:20, 1:00, 2:15, and 4:00 a.m.
  • Sabiha Gökçen, HVL-11: About hourly in the daytime. At night, 12:40, 1:45, 2:45, and 4:20 a.m.

There are no reservations. Havaist's own notice says you cannot pick a travel date or time. Your ticket has no set departure, so you take any bus on your line.

A bus can also leave early. Havaist does not carry standing passengers, and a full bus pulls out without waiting. The operator says it adds another bus at busy times, but it pays to arrive ahead of schedule.

How to pay for Havaist as a US traveler

Bus lines accept bank cards, İstanbulkart (the city transit card), and online tickets with a QR code. Cash works only on the Silivri and Arnavutköy lines.

The Havaist site lists Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Troy, Diners, Discover, and JCB. Check with your bank about foreign transaction fees before you tap.

Online tickets are sold on hava.ist and in the Havaist app. A ticket lasts 3 days and works only on the line you chose, in either direction, for one ride.

If you buy a round trip online, the return leg is 40% cheaper. The outbound ticket lasts 3 days and the return lasts 30 days. These tickets cannot be canceled or refunded, so buy this way only if your dates are firm.

Children up to age 5 ride free on a parent's lap, and older kids pay the seat fare.

Baggage rules

Two pieces up to a medium suitcase ride free. Each extra piece cost 120 lira on October 19, 2026.

Tell the staff your stop when you hand over your bag. Bags are loaded by stop, and if you name the wrong one, you may only get your bag back there.

Havaist does not take bicycles. Cats, dogs, and birds can ride in a closed carrier on your lap or by your seat.

Going back to the airport

Pick your stop in the "from" field on hava.ist. These times were read on October 19, 2026:

  • Taksim: HVL-9 leaves Taksim Square every 40 to 45 minutes in the daytime, and at 12:30, 2:45, 3:45, and 4:30 a.m.
  • Sultanahmet: HVL-13 starts at the İETT Çatladıkapı stop, opposite the Wedding Palace (Nikah Sarayı), and goes through Sirkeci and Şişhane. Departures run from 3:00 a.m. to 10:15 p.m.
  • Kadıköy: HVL-6 leaves about every 75 minutes, from 12:15 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Aksaray: HVL-1 leaves every 40 minutes in the daytime, from 12:15 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The bus drops you at Transportation Floor -2. From there, use Entrance Gates 1, 2, 3, or 4 for Departures.

Havaist advises you to reach the airport 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one. The ride from the center takes 1.5 to 2 hours, so for a flight home, leave about 5 hours before departure.

Sabiha Gökçen and Havabüs

Do not mix up the two airports. Havaist serves Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) only by a link to Istanbul Airport, line HVL-11, at 515 lira and about 2 hours. That line covers 85 km, or about 53 miles. At SAW, it leaves from the Simit Sarayı cafe opposite the arrivals exit, 22 times a day, including 12:05, 1:30, 3:00, and 4:40 a.m.

To reach the city from SAW, use Havabüs, a separate company. Its lines go to Taksim, Kadıköy, and Yenisahra. On October 19, 2026, buses to Taksim left every 30 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.

Havaist or the M11 metro

The M11 metro also serves the airport. The airport says the Halkalı to Arnavutköy section opened on June 20, 2026. The ride from the airport to Gayrettepe takes about 30 minutes, and you pay with İstanbulkart. A standard card paid 73.19 lira on the city tariff from July 20, 2026. Reaching Taksim, Sultanahmet, or Kadıköy takes at least one change.

Pick Havaist if you have big bags or land at night. Pick the metro if you travel light and want to beat traffic.

Why data helps on this trip

The Havaist app and site do a lot, but only online. Without data you cannot:

  • Buy or top up an online ticket
  • Open the timetable for your line
  • See where your bus is and how full it is
  • See route changes
  • Walk from your stop to the hotel on a map

Route changes do happen. On October 19, 2026, Havaist notices said HVL-2 was skipping Tepecik on the way to the airport, and HVL-6 was skipping Acıbadem on the way to Kadıköy.

The bus itself has free Wi-Fi, according to the Havaist site. You still need data to reach the bus and get to your door.

You do not need anything new if your US plan already includes data in Turkey at a cost you are happy with. Ask your carrier before you buy. And you can ride the bus with no data at all: the signs and your card will get you there.

If you want data from the moment you land, install a travel eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code. Your days start with your first connection in Turkey. Your regular number stays on as a second line. Our eSIMs are data only, with no phone number of their own. Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked, so check your phone here.

Our Turkey plans on October 30, 2026, start at $3.50 for 1 GB and 7 days. A 5 GB plan for 30 days is $9.50. As a generous rule of thumb, 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps, so the ride to your hotel will not dent it. You can add data to the same eSIM later. The networks in our Turkey catalog are Vodafone and Avea/Türk Telekom. See the Turkey page. On a layover instead? Read our Istanbul Airport lounge guide.
