Nha Trang SIM Card: Where to Buy One and When an eSIM Is Easier
You land at Cam Ranh after a long trip from the US. The beach in Nha Trang is still about 35 km away, and you need a ride, your hotel address, and a way to reach your driver. Airport Wi-Fi may show up on your list and still refuse to connect, and SIM counters keep hours set by the flight schedule.
A Nha Trang SIM card is easy to get if you have your passport and an unlocked phone with a SIM tray. You can buy one at Cam Ranh Airport or at a shop in town. If your phone supports eSIM, the easier path is to install a data eSIM at home and turn it on after you land. If your US plan already covers Vietnam at no extra cost, you may not need either.
In short:
- Cam Ranh's international terminal has SIM counters, and their hours follow the flight schedule.
- In town, the Viettel store at 69 Quang Trung lists 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, on October 10, 2026.
- Since April 15, 2026, a new Vietnamese number needs a face check as well as your passport.
- The Moosetrip Vietnam eSIM starts at $4.50 for 1 GB over 7 days, and 5 GB for 30 days is $14, on 2026-10-30.
Your options compared
| Option | What you need | When it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| US carrier daily pass | Nothing to set up | Right after landing | Very short trips, lots of calls |
| SIM at Cam Ranh | Passport, unlocked phone, SIM tray | When a counter is open | A local number, long stays |
| SIM at a city shop | Passport, unlocked phone, SIM tray | Shop hours | A local number, long stays |
| Moosetrip eSIM | Unlocked phone with eSIM support | Right after landing | Most trips of 3 to 30 days |
| Free Wi-Fi | Nothing | Terminal, hotel, cafe | Backup only |
Verizon lists TravelPass at $12 a day in most countries, and AT&T lists International Day Pass at $12 a day for one line. Ten days on one line comes to $120, while our 5 GB plan is $14. That comparison is not exact, because those passes include calls and texts and our eSIM is data only. Confirm Vietnam and the rate in your carrier app before you fly. Our TravelPass breakdown shows how the days add up.
Cam Ranh Airport: SIM counters and Wi-Fi
International flights use the international terminal, also called T2. The airport lists SIM card service at "multiple locations" with hours "subject to flight schedule." Its terminal map, read on October 10, 2026, marks three travel service counters on level G that sell SIMs:
- One sits in the checked baggage claim area.
- One sells MobiFone SIMs with plans by the day or by the gigabyte, next to currency exchange.
- One sells 5G SIMs along with tours, taxis, and hotels.
Currency exchange in the terminal also follows the flight schedule, so ask whether a counter takes cards before you line up.
The airport says Wi-Fi is free in all terminal areas, 24 hours a day. It works well as a bonus. Do not make it your only plan for reaching a driver. Cell signal at the terminal looks stronger: on nPerf's user test maps, Viettel and MobiFone show mostly 5G there, and Vinaphone shows 4G+.
Before you pay at a counter
- Hand over your original passport. The number is registered in your name, and staff will take your photo for the face check.
- Ask for the full total in dong, SIM included, and the date the plan ends.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and open a map while you are still at the counter.
Vietnam's face check rule started on April 15, 2026, under a Ministry of Science and Technology circular. It applies to new mobile subscriptions.
Before you fly, check your phone too. A plastic SIM needs a physical tray, so if your phone has none, a counter cannot help you. The phone must also be unlocked. You can check your phone here.
Phone shops in Nha Trang
If the airport counters are closed, or you would rather sort this out after you rest, these shops are the next stop. Hours come from each operator's site on October 10, 2026.
| Shop | Address | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Viettel, Loc Tho store | 69 Quang Trung, about 800 m from the Tram Huong tower on Tran Phu | Daily, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| MobiFone, CH Nha Trang | 69 Quang Trung | 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
| MobiFone, Vinh Hai | 361 Duong 2/4 | 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. |
| Vinaphone (VNPT) | 1 Hung Vuong, 04 Le Loi, 52 Truong Sa, 44 Dien Bien Phu | 7 a.m. to noon, 1:30 to 6 p.m. |
| Viettel, Cam Ranh store | 909 Hung Vuong, Cam Ranh | Daily, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. |
MobiFone and Viettel both give 69 Quang Trung as their address, so look for your operator's sign when you get there. The Cam Ranh store is 9.6 km from the terminal by road, and it is in the opposite direction from Nha Trang. Most travelers will find it easier to wait until they reach town.
A Vietnamese SIM replaces your US SIM if your phone has one slot. Your US line then stops getting calls and texts until you swap back, and that can block bank codes. Our guide on keeping your US number abroad covers this.
Where the signal is good and where it fades
nPerf builds its maps from tests run by users over two years, so a blank spot means nobody tested there. It does not prove there is no signal. The layers below were dated October 4 to 9, 2026. They show the networks, not the speed you will get on any one plan.
| Place | Viettel | Vinaphone | MobiFone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road from the airport to Tran Phu | Mostly 5G | 4G and 4G+ | 4G to 5G |
| Tran Phu beachfront | 5G | 4G+ and 5G | Mostly 5G |
| Dam Market | 4G and 5G | 4G+ | 4G and 4G+ |
| Po Nagar towers | 5G | 4G+ | 4G+ |
| Vinpearl cable car to Hon Tre | 5G | 4G and 4G+ | 4G, with a short gap |
| VinWonders on Hon Tre | 5G | 4G+ | 4G |
| Hon Mieu island | South beach only, 4G+ | No tests | South beach only, 4G |
| Hon Mun island | No tests | No tests | No tests |
| Ba Ho falls | Ticket office only, 4G+ | No tests | No tests |
| Doc Let beach | 4G+ and 5G | 4G | 4G+ |
The takeaway is simple. The city, the airport road, and the cable car look solid. Boat days are the weak spot. On the boat route past Hon Mun, Viettel has tests at only 4 of 55 points, with a gap of up to 8.5 km.
Bad weather can matter as well. After the November 2025 floods in Khanh Hoa, Bao Khanh Hoa reported that operators spent five days restoring flooded cell sites. By the evening of November 25, more than 95% were back.
Before a boat tour:
- Download an offline map of Nha Trang on hotel Wi-Fi.
- Screenshot your ticket, the return boat time, and the meeting point.
- Save your guide's number and your hotel address, and carry a power bank.
VinWonders listed cable car hours of 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on December 14, 2025, with the last ride off the island at 9:45 p.m. Weather can change those hours, so check before you rely on them.
Hotel and cafe Wi-Fi
Use hotel Wi-Fi for the heavy jobs: offline maps, photo backups, and app updates. Test the signal in your room when you check in, since it is often weaker than at the front desk. Set app updates to Wi-Fi only so your mobile data goes to maps, taxis, and messages. Do your banking on mobile data, not on open networks.
A travel eSIM for Nha Trang
An eSIM is a digital SIM. You install it at home over Wi-Fi with a QR code, and your regular number stays on as a second line. Days count from your first connection in Vietnam, so you can set it up well ahead of the flight.
Our Vietnam plans list the Viettel Mobile, Vinaphone, and MobiFone networks. Prices on 2026-10-30:
| Data | Valid for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $4.50 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | $9.50 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $14 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $24 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $42 |
After you land, set the eSIM as your line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line. Turn data roaming off on your US line so it does not start a daily pass.
To size your plan, use a cautious rule: 1 GB is about 5 hours of maps and taxi apps, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. Two hours of maps a day for 14 days is about 5.6 GB. A 10-minute video call each day adds about 1.6 GB. That is 7.2 GB, so a 10 GB plan leaves room. If you run low, you can add data to the same eSIM.
An eSIM has limits. It gives you no Vietnamese phone number, and your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. If you need a local number for calls, buy a SIM. Going on to other countries? Our Asia eSIM covers 14 countries, so check that every stop is on the list.
Questions
Can I buy a SIM card at Nha Trang airport at night?
Counters at Cam Ranh follow the flight schedule, so a late flight may still find one open. If not, the Viettel store at 69 Quang Trung opens at 7:30 a.m., on October 10, 2026. An eSIM installed at home avoids the question.
Is there free Wi-Fi at Cam Ranh Airport?
Yes. The airport says it is free in all terminal areas, 24 hours a day. Have a backup in case the login page does not load.
Which SIM card is best for Nha Trang?
Any of the three works in the city. For Hon Tre, Doc Let, and the road to Ba Ho falls, Viettel has tests in more places on nPerf's maps.
Do I need my passport to buy a SIM in Vietnam?
Yes. Bring the original. New numbers also need a face check since April 15, 2026.
Does an eSIM work in Nha Trang?
Yes, if your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. You install it at home and turn on data after you land at Cam Ranh.
Will I keep my US number with an eSIM?
Yes. It stays on as a second line. Check what your carrier charges for calls and texts in Vietnam, or you may pay roaming fees on that line.
