Internet in Mui Ne and Phan Thiet: SIM Shops, Dunes, and the Road There

Mui Ne has no passenger airport, so you reach it after several hours on the road or the train, and that is when you need data. Internet in Mui Ne is fine along the beach. On nPerf maps, the main beach road shows 4G on all three networks, and Viettel shows 5G at about half the points. You can buy a SIM with your passport, but the shops keep short hours and close on Sundays. An eSIM set up at home is simpler, since it works from the moment you land in Vietnam.

In short:

  • Phan Thiet has no passenger flights yet. You come by road or rail from Ho Chi Minh City, or by road from Cam Ranh.
  • Mui Ne's listed phone shops are open Monday to Saturday and close by 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, go to Phan Thiet.
  • 4G is available along the beach and in central Phan Thiet. Test data is thin at the White Dunes and at Hon Rom hill, so save your maps first.
  • A week of maps and rides fits in 3 GB. A month fits in 10 GB.

Getting to Mui Ne, and the signal on the way

Work on the civilian side of Phan Thiet Airport began on April 27, 2026. Reports describe a two-year build, and the investor has talked about opening in 2027. For now, plan on Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City or Cam Ranh near Nha Trang. We cover SIM cards and signal at Tan Son Nhat in our guide to Ho Chi Minh City SIM cards.

By car or bus. The trip is roughly 120 to 130 miles, mostly on expressways. VnExpress, in a guide updated August 6, 2026, puts the drive to Phan Thiet at about 2 hours and buses from Ho Chi Minh City at 200,000 to 450,000 VND. That is about $8 to $17.50 at 25,800 VND to the dollar on October 30, 2026. Mui Ne is about 11 miles past Phan Thiet station.

The signal is steady here. On nPerf, Viettel has user tests at all 753 points we read from the airport to the middle of the beach road. All show 4G or better, and 5G leads at 82% of them. MobiFone has about half a mile of 3G near Mui Ne.

By train. Saigon Station to Phan Thiet takes close to 4 hours, and tickets run 250,000 to 350,000 VND, about $10 to $13.50, per VnExpress. The summer 2026 timetable listed SPT2 leaving Saigon at 6:45 a.m. and reaching Phan Thiet at 10:42 a.m., with SPT1 heading back at 1:30 p.m. Times and running days change by season, so confirm yours with Vietnam Railways.

Signal along the track is patchier. Viettel has tests at 84% of the points we read, nearly all 4G or 5G. There are about 5 miles with no tests, roughly 10 to 15 miles before Phan Thiet, plus a few short 2G or no-signal stretches. Download your map and any shows before you board.

From Phan Thiet station to the middle of the beach road, Viettel shows 5G at 68 of 74 points, so you can book a ride from the platform.

From Cam Ranh. This route is about 119 miles along Highway 1 and the coast road. VnExpress lists buses from Khanh Hoa Province at 150,000 to 300,000 VND, about $6 to $12. Viettel shows 4G or better at 761 of 766 points. Expect about half a mile of 2G or no signal on the coast road.

Where to buy a SIM card in Mui Ne and Phan Thiet

Take your original passport. Since April 15, 2026, Circular 08/2026/TT-BKHCN has required each new number to be confirmed with data that includes a face scan, so expect a photo. Check your phone first, too. A plastic SIM needs a tray and an unlocked phone, and many newer iPhones sold in the US have no tray. Check your phone here.

These shops come from the operators' store finders. MobiFone was checked on October 30, 2026. Vinaphone and Viettel were checked on October 1, 2026. You may see older Binh Thuan addresses next to newer Lam Dong ones. Both mean the same Phan Thiet.

The MobiFone shops close for lunch, so go in the morning or later in the afternoon. If you need a SIM on Sunday, Vinaphone at 2 Le Hong Phong in Phan Thiet is your best bet.

Viettel's store finder lists no shop in Mui Ne. Its Phan Thiet location is listed as a digital device sales center, so ask if it sells tourist SIMs before you make a special trip.

Where the signal works

This table comes from nPerf, a site that maps speed tests run by ordinary users over the past two years. These are other people's tests, not ours. It shows the most common network within about 300 feet of each spot, read on October 1, 2026. "No data" means nobody has tested there. It does not prove there is no network.

For maps, messages, and rides, 4G does the job, so you do not need to chase 5G.

The gaps are out of town. Inside Fairy Stream and at the waterfall near its top end, there are almost no nearby tests, though all three networks show 4G or better within a third of a mile. At Hon Rom hill and at Bau Trang Lake near the White Dunes, nobody has tested even within that range.

Save your offline map and hotel address before you ride out. GPS works without data, so your dot still moves on a downloaded map.

How much data for a week or a month

Mui Ne draws longer stays, so here are both. We use careful numbers: 1 GB covers about 5 hours of maps and rides, or about 1.5 hours of video calls. Plan prices are from our catalog as of October 30, 2026.

Your dayOne weekOne month
1 hour of maps and ridesAbout 1.4 GB: 3 GB plan, $9.50About 6 GB: 10 GB plan, $24
2 hours of maps, 15 minutes of video callsAbout 4 GB: 5 GB plan, $14About 17 GB: 20 GB plan, $42

All these plans last 30 days. If you run short, you can add data to the same eSIM, so you do not need a new setup. Leave movies and big downloads for hotel Wi-Fi.

Setting up an eSIM before you fly

Scan the QR code at home over Wi-Fi. Days start at your first connection in Vietnam, so you can buy early. When you land, turn on data for that line. The eSIM is data only. Your US number stays on as a second line, so you can still get bank codes.

Our Vietnam plans list Viettel, Vinaphone, and MobiFone as networks. That is handy here, because Viettel has no listed shop in Mui Ne. With an eSIM, you never need to find one.

An eSIM is not always the right call. If your US plan already includes enough data in Vietnam, stick with it and confirm the terms in your carrier app. On a month-long stay, a daily pass adds up fast: Verizon lists TravelPass at $12 a day in most countries, and AT&T lists its International Day Pass at $12 a day. See how that adds up.
